The idea involves local businesses posting signs and stickers to show their support for the gay community, some councillors fear the idea could backfire and cause more abuse of homosexuals.
SYDNEY (AFP) - Australia's gay capital Sydney came under attack from a rebel city councillor on Monday over its plans to create 'homophobia-free zones' in the heart of its bar and nightclub precinct. The City of Sydney Council this month voted five-to-four for the special designation for parts of the city favoured by gays and lesbians to deter violence, abuse and harassment against homosexuals.

Vinny, I like this story. It's good stuff. That would be segregation... didn't we try to revese discrimination once by bringing everyone together?

Thanks Al, I find this a bit strange does it mean other areas are not required to be 'homophobia-free zones'.

Vinny, I like this story. It's good stuff. In Vancouver we have clear signage delininating Gay Districts, these districts are frequented almost exclusively by gays and non gays alike, as the neighbourhood is one of the better nightspots as well as dining districts.

Thanks Barry, I live in a village without a Gay District I only know one person (a friend and neighbour) here who is openly gay.

In Area 51 you don't have to be gay to wear pink hot pants and culottes!

Interesting story. Like a lot of the commenters here, I'd also worry about the segregating effect this will have. I wonder if such 'affirmative actions' are still necessary, or whether they'd actually do more to reinforce differences.
