Sylvester Jiles Gets 15 Years for Breaking Into Florida Jail
Sylvester Jiles, a 25-year-old Florida man, was sentenced on March 23 to 15 years in prison for trying to break into a prison 3 days after he was released.
Jiles was originally given 8 years probation for a manslaughter charge in connection to the February 2007 shooting death of 19-year-old Dustin Prouse. He and was released from Brevard County Detention Center after accepting a plea deal last summer.
Jiles Sought Protection from Victim's Family
On the last day of August, he returned to the prison and begged officers to lock him up for his own protection, fearing that the victim’s family would come after him.
When the guards told him to file an incident report, he violated his probation by scaling a 12-foot fence. He then tried to climb a second fence, but got deep cuts from the barbed wire at the top and fell. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Sylvester Jiles Sentenced to 15 Years
In January, Jiles was convicted of trespassing on jail property and resisting an officer. He told the judge he feared for his life outside of jail.
Video of the sentencing shows Jiles quiet before the judge as his attorney defends his attempted reverse jailbreak.
This man has a 9th Grade education, he wasn’t out to hurt anyone,” said Jiles’ attorney. “He may have acted irrationally, as was said by the state, but I believe ... all of the other jail personnel seemed to have a lot of care for him and concern for him and what he was facing.
Afterward, relatives of Jiles were videotaped leaving the courtroom. One woman repeatedly shouted obscenities to members of the media while a man with her held up his coat to block cameras from getting photos of the family.

The article should be amended so that it's more clear that he scaled the fence only after a guard told him that the Prouse family really was coming after him and his mother.
