Taroko National Park:
Taiwan’s 2nd largest national park, marble face, gorge highway, heavily tunneled route, memorial arch, impressive scenic sections of Central Cross-island Highway through Taroko Gorge + rocks towers + racing river
From Huelian Train Station, take Huelian Bus to Taroko National Park
TRAIN: From Hualien花蓮 051 or Sincheng 新城 Hsin-cheng 054 train stnt, take bus to Tiansiang
BUS to Tiansiang: Hualien bus, Airbus, Hope Land Transport (Serivce infrequent, call to determine times)

Tunnel of Nine Turns (Jiucyudong) :
- 30min walk, one of the most scenic parts of gorge, enchanting scene of river, stone strata, tunnel, vegetation, best place to observe gorge’s ecology, Swallows’ Grottos燕子口- marble cliff faces w small holes, House swifts, Pacific swallow nest here
Buluowan Trail - Riverside trail system – 3 major scenic routes:
i) Huanlioucyiou (Meander Core)
- planked footway snakes up along small projecting stone hill in secluded setting
ii) Scenic Trail terrain & Gueijhulin (Makino Bamboo Forest) Scenic Trail
- circles around a tableland cabin area following a rock-lined path. Passes through an environment rich in subtropical plants and Makino bamboo. Cherry, plum & peach trees bloom: Dec-Feb
iii) Lyushuei-Heliou Trail :
- situated along 1 of the many terraces of Liwu River in Lyushuei, abt 2km fr Tiansiang, off Central Cross-island Highway. A small part of the Old Hehuan Trail, 45min walk. Along forested path-a small bridge, river, tunnel & various types of plant. A protective railing along the cliff side section. Beautiful landscape, 2m wide path, gentle slope, 30m tunnel, torchlight needed, dense forest, cliff terrain, historical monuments, special botanical ecosystem, overlook Liwu River Valley n Lyushui terrace, plants on rocks, esp Taroko oak; gravel paths at trail end, return to Central Cross-Island hwy near campsite.
Highly recommended: SHAKADAN TRAIL (Mysterious Valley Trail)
Taroko Visitor Center (Hwy 8, 189 km) -- 1km west of headquarters -- Shakadang Bridge(Hwy 8, 190 km) -- Entrance (right side of bridge; few min from Taroko Gorge entrance, behind Shakadang Toll Station; follow path behind toll stnt down towards Liwu River, cross stream, follow bank until rivers folds at Shakadang tributary, trailhead nearby right bank of tributary) -- Shakadang Trail (numerous river crossings, rock folds, formations, dense forest, boulders, animals, emerald green waters, fishes, freshwater shrimps, crab, frogs, waterborne insects, numerous dragonflies & damselflies; prepare to get wet, swim wear best, can swim/soak in water; sun on boulders) -- after 25min walk, reach platform – excellent view of stream & folded marble strata -- wooden walkways leads away from main trail & follows the stream (popular spot on weekends) -- End of trail - 4.5 km one way; ends 3D-cabin, Sanjianwu, tourists’ fav -- After 1st curve, see deep pool with clear water -- swimming + picnic -- head back to trailhead (food avail near visitor centre etc)
