Web Of Dallas TASER Party NBC News Cast

I've been to a tupperware party - one of my friends is even a tupperware salesperson, but I've never heard of tasering parties before.
Dana Shafman, a business woman in the United States, has started a new way for women to get together, have cake, and spend money.... by buying their very own personal taser.

Miss Shafman, 35, is on a mission to persuade the fearful, but fashion-conscious, women of America to pack 50,000 volts of self-defence in their handbags.

"This device has changed my life," she told a room full of women in suburban Miami last week. "I no longer live in fear. I challenge you all with one question. How will you defend yourself if you’re attacked?"

The Arizona entrepreneur deployed her sales patter and folksy western charm as she praised the merits of the palm-sized C2 stun gun – available for $350 in a variety of fashionable colours, including the best-selling "hot pink".Sixteen women, aged 18 to 58, sat and listened at the home of a Miami business couple whose pastor, a self-confessed gun fan, invited Miss Shafman to give her sales pitch to the women, most of whom attend his church. And as with any good Tupperware-style party, after the talk and the demonstration came the chance to test the wares.

The evening ended with the women sizzling away at an aluminium foil target as some of their husbands sat in the garden, smoking cigars in the balmy night air.But first Miss Shafman, who set up her Shieldher company to market so-called "Lady Tasers" last year, talked about her own fears as a woman living alone in Phoenix.

She had previously slept with a baseball bat by her bed and later a knife stashed under her pillow before she fell in love with the first stun gun marketed directly at women."The Taser is my seatbelt for life," she enthused. "There is now no longer any day when I believe I am going to get raped or assaulted."

amyjudd - a very interesting read! I didn't know tasers could be carried in the US. It appears there are no licensing requirements, which I think is dangerous.  I might also add my opinion that Miss Shafman has definitely found a way to market a very dangerous 'weapon'.  The taser is utilized in 'distance targets' only, and it can kill.  I think if women are really concerned about their safety, they should take a class in self-defense.  If still not confident, enroll in firearms instruction to obtain a license to purchase a firearm for safety.

Amy - I did a quick research (what state's allow tasers) - beyond a required background check, no formal training is required of a civilian to use a taser - they simply read the owner's manual and watch an instructional DVD.  All states except NY, NJ, RI, Hawaii, Maryland, Washington, DC permit civilians to own tasers.  Michigan legislators are pushing bills that would only allow CCW (carry concealed weapon) permit holders to own tasers because they have already undergone training in firearms.  Over time, I think state's that are lax will enact appropriate laws regarding ownership of the taser.

Very interesting Rhonda. Thanks for the information. It's shocking to me that someone can own a deadly weapon simply by reading the manual and watching the DVD. Isn't that also how you own some electrical appliances!?

Amy,

Georgia, USA is a right to carry state.  In Georgia all you have to do to carry a Gun is go to the Tax assessors office or the court house, pay a fee, get fingerprinted, and pass a background check.  No one asks if you know how to fire or even opperate a weapon.  in about 6 weeks you can carry a gun almost anywhere in the state

Wow, I had no idea, thanks. That's kind of scary to me...

Tasers good, rapists bad!

Tasers are only dangerous when used improperly or on people high on stimulants or with a really weak heart.  So if you are a candidate for bypass surgery or are all jacked up on speed (or both)don’t go attacking our women or you might die.  Got that?

I support women carrying tasers.  Maybe if the human waste that attacks innocent women thought they might get 50,000 volts in the cajones, violence against women would decrease.  I would feel better about my girlfriend being out late at night if she was able to carry a taser and would buy her one if they were legal where I live.
