OPINION

A Port St. Lucie, Florida kindergarten teacher Wendy Portillo left us dumbfounded this week, leaving us to ask “why?” If it wasn’t for consistency’s sake This Week’s Top Scrooge would be crowned This Year’s Bonehead.

This Week’s Top Scrooge - May 30, 2008

Prompted by Portillo, Alex Barton’s Morningside Elementary School classmates were allowed to say what they didn’t like about him and take a vote about whether they wanted him in class or not. By a 14 to 2 margin, 5-year-old Alex lost.

Alex is being evaluated for Asperger’s syndrome — an autism spectrum disorder. Guess how Portillo thought it best to deal with an apparently very trying day with Alex…not just send him out of the classroom to school aides, but to have his classmates rag on him when he came back.

Long ago and far away Autism, before it went designer was pretty much a non issue. Enter the Movie Rain Man and the now billion Dollar Autism Empire. Autism has taken on a new life and it has a hold of the wrong end of the stick.  I am old high functioning Autisitc and I can tell you Autism IS BOTH MR/DD  and Einstein and those of us connecting the dots are banished from Autism  today.  Just how can they explain us and our almost normal lives?

I had many Experiences like Wendy is noted for doing in my life and they built character among other things , Alex was probably not hurt long term but Autism 's Ego might have been.

TheBigRuski, I like this story. It's good stuff.

How incredibly cruel. The child has enough trouble. This is sure to make things even worse for him.

That teacher needs to be fired. If not, sent to serious counseling while on probation. Or maybe: convene a meeting and allow every worker in the school and every student to comment on her and vote. Ahem.
