ABC TV - Time Travel: Fantasy or Science? Ron Mallett's Quest

Ronald Mallett an acclaimed physicist had an idea since he was a child to build a time machine to go back and see his idol and hero; his own father. His father died when Mallett was just 10.  Mr Mallett may have unlocked the puzzle to this once thought sci-fi story and make it a reality.  The main problem is however according to Mr Mallett you can not go back in time past the point when the machine was turned on.  Despite that the idea of a human travelling through time is one that is beyond explaination.

I agree, see history first hand would be amazing but of course if it was availible to the public there would be major problems with people trying to change the past and who knows what kind of effect it could have on the here and now!!!

Check out his book, TimeTraveler. It's a very inspiring personal story as well as a good background into what type of time travel is possible. The equations and machine he invented do not allow a person to travel back in time past the moment the time machine was first turned on. It's a really wild concept through it ultimately means we can never go back to see any great civilizations, a dream of mine as well.
