Charlie Chaplins film 'The Circus' (1928) - Woman with mobile phone!

Has a time traveler been caught on film in 1928 using a cell phone prior to the opening of a Charlie Chaplin film premiere?  It would appear that this is the case, the footage in question shows a heavy set women walking down the street speaking into a device that strikingly resembles a cellular phone.  This would be remarkable for a variety of reasons firstly to confirm something had taken place in proving that the possibility of time travel could exist, or that some kind of early technology unseen by many was available to the super rich well before many had taken notice.  It should be mentioned that this device does not appear to be an am/fm radio transceiver or a CB radio it does fit the particular guidelines for a cell phone it's practical use.   This would be an unbelievable human achievement if proven true, further analysis needs to be taken on this most unusual film footage segment.

FANNGH - you are an idiot and your teacher in school must have been one too. It's obvious that her hand is cupped as if it is a phone. Ding dong, know one is home!

If you are going to call someone an idiot, make sure you know the difference between "no" and "know", you idiot.

Really? Lets see.... Cell phone towers did not exist then, so how would someone be using a phone when it wouldn't have service?   This is like saying someone is using a printer in the middle ages.   Where are they going to get the power (electricity) to use the printer?

NO BRAINER..SORRY FOLKS..THIS IS AN ACTOR THAT CUT THE RECEIVER PART OF THEIR PHONE OFF AND TOOK IT TO WORK SO THEY COULD REHEARSE THEIR LINES FOR THEIR PART. Being in the Filming business I see Actors Rehearsing their part. IF you google old telephone you can see that the phone that used in 28 is the identical shape to the phone in this footage. Stay Cool, & Blow up the footage and look at the round shape of the device that this Actor is using.  Michael V Caldwell Executive Producer Of;  "HOT ROD HORROR" (Filmed in Fresno Ca)

Yes mike, that is reasonable and out of most comments here this is only way sounds logic to me.

maybe we should go back in time to see if she is a time traveler...

I think it is a hearing aid or they are crazy.  Siemens had one out at that time about the same size.  Some people think it is a telephone with the cord cut off.  However, the issue with that is a telephone cost $200 ($14 then) in today's money.  There was also no RJ-11 jack to remove and AT&T owned the phones.  You just didn't go around cutting off the line.  Others say that it could be a walkie-talkie.  The walkie-talkie was not invented until the late 30's and early 40's.  It was also for military use.

I agree 100% with you. The hearing aids back then were massive and look like cell phones. Google image search first hearing aids and you will see.

i cannot believe how stupid people are.even if it is a cellphone, who is she talking to and how? as far as i know, cellphones need a Base station in proximity to stay connected on the network.oh and please dont comeback with comments such as : she is from future and her cell phone works without a signal ..

What is stupid is not people but micro one leveled thinking people that see things in "only our timeline" scenarios .  If and when humanity conquers time travel with harnessing that technology I am sure communication devices will not need low tech ancient cell phone towers or a network base tower it would work with a signal a temporal quantum signal  .  Look up quantum computers the possibilities are endless .  Time will only tell

Ok... assume it is a cell-phone or similar device... that isn't signficant... whom is she talking to?  That's the real question.  It is clear in the clip that she is talking to it, therefore it is either a prop (as suggested above) or possibly a portable recording device, a dictophone or some such device.

Looks like a portable recording device that makese more sense. I am rather skeptical of this time travel theory. Its only human to come up with some wierd and wonderful conspiracy theory about time travel.

It's a Western Electric Model 34A "Audiphone" Carbon Hearing Aid. You can look it up at the Hearing Aid Museum. You may find a striking similarity of appearance between this device, and an iPod.

Hearing aid guys......I believed this story for the better half of my whole day. Then i talked to an intelligent teacher and he made me realize its definitely a hearing aid. The first hearing aids look a lot like cell phones. Google image search first hearing aids to see for yourself.
