Tufts University: School Bans Sex If Your Roommate is in the Dorm

For many, it's a college rite of passage: plugging your ears or crawling out of the room as your dormmate hooks up with someone in the bed next to you. Well, students at Tuft University won't have to worry about that anymore. The university has said issued a rule that outlaws sex in a Tufts dorm while your roommate is in the room.

"You may not engage in sexual activity while your roommate is present in the room. Any sexual activity within your assigned room should not ever deprive your roommate(s) of privacy, study, or sleep time."

Tufts said they implemented the new rule after receiving about a dozen complaints in the past three years.

The school also says that the new rule was designed to make students more considerate of others, not to curb their sexual activity.

Others see the Tufts policy as impractical at best. Many students would no doubt risk a reprimand from the school for a quick roll in the hay. It's also unclear how the school will find out about such violations. Any student who would report a violation would no doubt risk alienating their roommate and looking like a sexless busybody.

Senior political science major Rick Zeckendorff scoffed at the provision.

"It sounded pretty ridiculous to me the first time that I heard about it," he said. "Because it's unenforceable. People in those situations aren't thinking in terms of the law or school regulations."
