They try to find solutions and fix problems in places afar like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Tibet and where not.

But the hundred most powerful men and women called U.S. senators continue to eat food infested by rats as they do not seem to know what is happening in their own kitchen.

As soon as the guests leave and dusk sets in, the rats take over the kitchen at the impressive, colonial-style and almost imperial Dirksen Senate Office Building in Washington DC.

Some of the most important people in the U.S. including past presidents and present president Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Majority leader Steny Hoyer and visiting foreign dignitaries enjoy food prepared at the Dirksen kitchen.

An announcement in the eating area at Dirsken strictly prohibits taking of pictures, but now it seems it is not meant for the privacy of the senators but to keep the rats from public glare.

A reporter who was at the kitchen after dark was surprised to find rats flying in the kitchen and at least one woman supervisor tiptoeing there out of fear a rat might jump on her.

The kitchen is housed in the basement level of the building and this is one of the two kitchens that caters to all the dining and luncheon events at the Capitol Complex including the Russell, Hart senate office buildings and the Capitol Visitor Center.

Some of the richest Americans also come to attend hearings and social events at the Capitol and recently Bill and Melinda Gates were there, but the world famous billionaire couple only drank water without touching any food.

One of the largest catering chains, Restaurant Associates, was recently contracted to overlook the catering needs at the Capitol Complex but it was unclear if they have informed the senate officials about the unhygienic conditions in the kitchen.

A number of extremely dangerous diseases can be caused by rats and mice.

Rats seek out a warm and safe place to spend the nights, and so they go in attics. They then seek out things to gnaw on, because that's what rodents do. These disease-ridden critters are nocturnal, and can often be heard scampering up the walls and in the attic at night. They chew on electrical wires, contaminate food, and spread diseases, such as the ones outlined above.

Some time back, rat infestation at a famous food chain outlet in New York sent shock waves throughout the country.

Among the other interesting stories about the Dirksen senate office building one was about the birth of a boy in a restroom. A page, who had given birth to the boy after having an extramarital affair with a U.S. lawmaker, named her son Dirksen.

Ahmar Mustikhan, I think your story has potential but needs some improvement. I am not sure if your piece is a  work of satire as I can't find any other sources on this. Can you provide some links for the news pieces? Thanks.

Good story! I had no idea the Gates were so conscientious. I buy delivery from a restaurant I seldom go to. Who knows how clean it is?! We take our chances with public restaurants and apparently private ones, too. Most of us don't get sick as a result, though.
