At approximately 5pm on Thursday 1st January 2009 I spotted 3 red/orange hued circular objects in the sky to the North West of Alloa. They were moving slowly South then within 5mins all 3 of them veered off on a 45 degree trajectory, the red/ornage hue dimming as they went till they eventually disappeared. Did anyone else see these objects and can anyone shed light as to what they were or may have been?

Hi Lindsmitch thanks for this eyewitness report, I have not seen any othe reports about this sighting. It does sound like they could be lanterns especially as it was New Years Day!

Thanks Vinny. What kind of lanterns would they be and would they all move on exactly the same path? This is the first time I have ever seen anything like this and am very intrigued!

Without seeing them myself or seeing some video it would be impossible to say, all over the UK a large amount of sightings are turning out to be Chinese lanterns released from parties like this case in Grangemouth.

Ah right, thanks for the link - they were definitely not anything like that, these objects were very high in the sky - difficult to say how high as it was dark but I'd guess not that far from the height that planes fly and they moved fast, all following the same route - there is no way they were lanterns similar to the one in the attached Grangemouth case. Just wish someone else had seen them!!

Perhaps someone else from your area who has seen them might read this post and may even have pics or video to add!. It would be an idea to contact your local newspaper, local papers in the UK often publish stories like this and ask if other readers saw anything.

Great idea, I will do that. Fingers crossed.

I have spoken to the news editor at the Alloa Advertiser he is going to take a look at your post!

They don't have any other reports about this sighting at this time.

Too bad you could't get a picture of it... interesting pic you uploaded with the story!

The pic is of one of the lanterns that caused the Grangemouth "alien invasion" fears in Scotland last year.

Being a newcomer to this, I did wonder why that pic appeared with my story! It's defo not connected though! I wish I had got a picture of them, it was all over in a few mins tho, I wouldn't have had time to run inside for my camera unfortunately :(
