UK Woman Sentenced to 8 Wks in Jail For Loud Sex Noise Complaint
Police have issued a couple from Tyne and Wear in England a noise abatement notice when a postman and neighbours complained the couple's sex escapades in their own home were too loud.
Caroline Cartwright,48, tore up the notice as soon as she received it and told local news, ''I used Article 8 of the Human Rights Act to argue 'respect for my private and family life.' I also claimed I could not help making the loud noise during sex with my husband.''
The noises drowned out the neighbour's television and they thought she was being murdered. The noises would start at midnight and last 2 or 3 hours into the morning.
Sunderland council installed specialized equipment to record the noise and it reached as high as 30 - 40 decibels, with the highest reaching 47 decibels, the same amount a washing machine makes on spin.
The woman said, "I did not understand why people asked me to be quiet because to me it is normal. I didn't understand where they were coming from. I have tried to minimize the situation by having sex in the morning - not at night - so the noise was not waking anybody. I may be sympathetic to it, but it is not something I am doing on purpose.
She appeared before Newcastle Court and was sentenced to 8 weeks in prison.
