US Flag 'Offensive' at Kindred Hospital in Mansfield, Texas

Debbie McLucas, an employee at Kindred Hospital in Mansfield, Texas was stunned when she was told to remove a US flag she had in her office window because it was deemed "offensive" by hospital administrators. The US flag offensive? In Texas??

The mother of three military service people, one of whom, her daughter, is currently serving in Iraq for a second tour, and army wife, Debbie McLucas hung the flag to honor her family and her country during the week leading up to Memorial Day. On the Friday before the Memorial Day long weekend she was told to remove the US flag because it was "offensive."

McLucas, a supervisor at Kindred Hospital in Mansfield, Texas, had displayed the 3-by-5-foot flag in the office she shares with the hospital’s three other supervisors. McLucas said one of her colleagues, a woman who immigrated to the United States from Africa 14 years ago, complained about the flag to upper management, and the hospital decided to take down the flag.

"I was told that as long as my flag offended one person, it would be taken down," McLucas said.

She said the hospital told her that the American flag flying outside the building would have to suffice. "I was told, ‘There is a flag hanging out front, everyone can see that one. Is that not enough?’"

No, she said, that wasn't enough.

"It is more than I can even fathom, that you would find the American flag offensive, in America," McLucas said.

I would just like to express how horrified I am that an American hospital could consider an American flag offensive.  Do they honestly not realize that without the sacrifices that flag represents, neither the hospital nor none of the jobs would exist?  As for the colleague who complained, I would suggest she take a history lesson and be grateful the men and women who support that flag keep her safe at night.  The person who removed our flag and left it on the ground should be ashamed of themselves and on the search for a new job.

If someone finds the U.S. flag offensive, perhaps they ought to be invited to leave the country.

Here is the real issue, it is call the First Amendment to the US Constitution, which also by the way protects those who would burn the flag. Once freedom of speech & expression are prohibited in the USA, then we have submitted to control of the government and the media as a whole. Whether or not the person protesting the flag being there likes it, the person displaying the flag has the EQUAL right to display the flag, just as I have the freedom to tell everone I know to send an email, letter or phone call to Kindred Hospital telling them that they are WRONG.

I suppose, as Paschen said, they have a right to set the behavior standards at their facility. Funny no administrators were worried about the flag until one disgruntled person complained about being offended . It appears the woman wanting to fly it was offended when asked to take it down. Which offense is the more important one to the admin? It seems the offense at seeing the flag is weighted heavier than being offended at not being able to display it. Fine. I suggest anyone in an area served by a Kindred hospital who is offended by their actions go out of their way to avoid doing anything that will bring money to that company, i.e. ANY Kindred hospital/health facility, even if it means changing doctors. I would further suggest they write an e-mail to their web site(s) telling them of their displeasure and actions because of it. Write early and often, and encourage your friends to do the same.

The Proud American

I want to thank all the people reading this who have or know someone that has fought and/died for the my rights and of the people like this idiot immigrant flag protester. It's the blood of these brave people that made this country what it is today, and thank God there are people like them. Thanks to all the supporters here who love this country and are willing to let everyone know how much they do. I want to remind all the supporters here of a very important FACT:

The great majority of people who live here LOVE this country and the men and women who protect it. They are proud and strong. They sit next to you at airshows and get a lump in their throat when they see a jet fly over while "Proud to be an American" is played over the sounds sytem. But they often sit silently in the corner while the less than 1% of the people who piss and moan about Our Country speak their minds and disrespect the great lives we have here.  Don't be fooled. There are good people are all around you and they read this stuff too. They are watching these idiots make fools of themeselves in these blogs.

I assure you of this; If the day comes when things go bad here and fighting breaks out, the nay-sayers would be wiped out in less than a week.

GOD BLESS AMERICA AND THE AMERICAN FLAG THAT REPRESENTS IT!

Amen

I think those of us who were offended that Debbie had to take down the American flag should send American flags of all sizes to the hospital so they can know how strongly we feel. Lets just bury them in USA flags. Hopefully, they will replace the tattered flag and give away the ones they get. After all it is almost Flag day, June 14th and the 4th of July.

If that happened in my workplace, I would quit my job, at whatever personal cost.  Thankfully I am privately employed; nevertheless, it is time for a revival of patriotism in the United States.  In Nazi Germany people didn't burn flags.  They even had neighborhood organizers that made sure the proper regalia was displayed.  You might not like 'em, but if America is going to mean anything to tomorrow's generation, we are going to have to be willing to embrace Nationalism - politically correct or not.  We can can talk about how we live in a free country... but if THE PEOPLE do not stand for the principles of freedom in the PRIVATE SECTOR, the only places where America will remain free will be our streets and public squares.  My closing thoughts?  Give flag-haters 30 days to evacuate the country, and after that if they are still there, run over them with an M-1 Tank.  The 10th Amendment of the Constitution declares that "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."  Let us use the powers RESERVED TO THE PEOPLE to continue supporting the United States and our Emblem!

My first thought is that this must be a fantastic work environment - one can only imagine how nice it is to work with someone who is "offended" by the sight of the American flag. One has to wonder what criteria this person used to choose the United States as the country to immigrate to - let's see, yes, I know I'll move to the country that offends me most. Hmm, Cuba - no. France - no. United States - yes, that is the country that I hate the most so I'll move there...I wonder if they use that criteria for choosing restaurants - I can't stand chicken. Let's go to KFC...then stands up halfway through the meal exclaiming, "this is a horrible meal" and demands that KFC stop serving chicken.

It's good to see that the company overrode it's on-site manager - hopefully, his/her next position will be choosing what tp to stock in the office's restroom.

As for workplace censorship, yes there are limits - no swasitkas, KKK logos, etc. but if someone wants to hang an American flag (or Nigerian or Dutch or Swedish or NASCAR or Boston Red Socks - well maybe not the Red Socks), it's hard to imagine that that should be banned.

As an aside, I remember a couple years back some reporter on CNBC or MSNBC - one of the NBC cable channels - made a joke on air about how the president looked like a monkey. I think they've since been promoted to host a show on the main NBC network - Today perhaps. Can you imagine what their career would be like if they made a similar comment today? They'd be lucky to get a job as a weathercaster in Fargo if not jail time....I guess there's offensive and then there's OFFENSIVE...

If this immigrant is so offended by the American flag I suggest they go back to their third world hellhole. The supervisor should be deported immediately!
