Vancouver Woman Attacked by Bear While Gardening

We came across this Black Bear while hiking the North Coast Trail on Vancouver Island. With the noise of the waves and being we were down wind from him, he was totally oblivious to our presence. To continue on our path we had to get his atention by banging rocks and making lots of noise (there were 8 of us). As this is a fairly new trail the wildlife do not appear to be 'human aware' yet. He did not sem too alarmed by our presence, but with the size of the group and noise decided to head back into the bush. We took the widest path possible around the area he was feeding so as not to provoke any challenge from him. The whole bear issue is no different to our interaction with all wildlife, we as humans choose to visit or inhabit these areas. With the right education this can provide some of the most magnificant sites and experiences....start programing wildlife that human presence will provide sources of food and we change the balance of nature and predictability of behaviour.

This particular black bear in my photo was in captivity, sleeping at the Tallahassee (Florida) Museum of History and Natural Science. I guess I would hate to see one of these awake and in my yard!

I spent the past week touring the interior of Alaska. This is a young black bear we encountered during a riverboat cruise up the Susitna river heading toward Devil's Canyon in the Talkeetna area. This bear was quite curious about us because he/she kept trying to get a better look while grazing the train tracks. It is interesting to note that bears are 80% vegetarian.

This black bear in my photo was grazing in the bushes beside the Klondike Highway in British Columbia in June 2008.

This black bear was spotted at the Annie Mae Lodge in Gustavus Alaska. The bear stalked the house and eventually got into the shed at the inn. The kitchen staff threw rocks to scare the bear off.

This bear and another was being chased out by two rangers as well. With rocks and alot of yelling, they left without any incident

We watched these two cubs of the year; a black and cinnamon colored for hours during the week we visited Yellowstone in May of this year. The cubs belong to a sow black bear that park regulars refer to as "Rosie." She and her cubs are frequently seen in the Tower/Roosevelt area, and you can always count on Rosie to have new cubs. It was probably equally amazing to see the number of onlookers and photographers that these two small cubs drew.

I took this photo of an American Black bear at the Pittsburgh Zoo on July 27th. It was a very hot day, so the bear was just sleeping in the sun. Beautiful animal.

On the road from Haines Alaska to Haines Junction YK on August 1, 2008 we spotted this black bear midday just off the highway. We stopped the car and he took some interest in us and came a little closer. He wasn't aggressive but we got back in and waited until he left the area.

This black bear was probably attracted by the scent of the grill at a picnic. He was no threat and left the area. Here in New Jersey it's reported that black bear attacks are rare. They're usually attracted by improperly disposed garbage and food.

This small black bear lives close to the Huckleberry Mine in British Columbia, Canada.
While bears are large and potentially dangerous animals I personally have never experienced aggressive behaviour from them.

This photo was taken last fall while on vacation in the central B.C.coast region. A group of us were on a viewing platform above this stream on Princess Royal Island hoping for a glimpse of the rare Kermode or spirit bear (which we did see!)
There were many black bears close by feeding on the salmon paying no attention to us on the platform.

I saw this bear near the edge of the highway at Banff National Park, British Columbia, Canada. The bear was not shy of all the people that stopped to take pictures. It was calmly feasting on some dandelions.

We were driving uo to Hurricane Ridge one the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state. we came around a bend and these two bears were on the hill to our right above us and maybe 50 feet away. I took this photo through the sunroof of the car.

I do hope the lady recovers well.  I live in Squamish BC and I see a black bear wanders through my backyard once or twice a year.  As a matter of fact there was one two weeks ago eating my blueberries in the backyard.

My black bear was found at Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina. He is living in the wildlife refuge and was quite playful that day!

This photo of a black bear was taken in Glacier Bay National Park in Alaska. Our "bear whisperer" guide showed great insight and respect for this bear's territory, allowing us to view the bear eating grass for quite a while. The bear kept an eye on us, but eventually moved on.
