Video shows Marine throwing puppy off a cliff

(CNN) -- The military is investigating a "shocking and deplorable" YouTube video that seems to show a Marine throwing a puppy off a rocky cliff.

YouTube.com removed the video for violating the Web site's terms of use.

The black-and-white puppy makes a yelping sound as it flies through the air.

"That's mean, that was mean," one companion says off-camera, addressing the alleged puppy thrower by his last name. The fate of the animal is not known.

The Marine is identified on the video and in other Internet postings as a lance corporal stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe.

It's not clear where the video was shot, although the man who appears to throw the puppy and another Marine are in full combat gear with helmets.

YouTube.com had taken down the video by 12:30 p.m. ET Tuesday "due to terms of use violation," according to a banner on the Web site.

"This is a shocking and deplorable video that is contrary to the high standards that we set for every Marine," Marine Corps spokesman Maj. Chris Perrine said at a news conference Monday night.

I am disgusted by the total lack of respect for life including puppies by this world. This reinforces my desire to see the military in America abolished.

There's been some discussion over whether the puppy is real or not, or whether it might have already been dead when this guy threw it. What do people think?

This is disgusting, and I hope for the puppy's sake that it was already dead when he threw it. I can barely even bring myself to look at the stills of the video, let alone actually watch it, and I hope these 'soldiers' are severly punished for what they did.

Yeah the puppy was alive when it was thrown, I am appalled that you tube has been allowed to broadcast this for everyone to view, like we don't see enough violence in day to day life, last week they posted a video of a single mother being rapped in front of her children. They should screen the videos more stringently, children can view this on the web, is there not enough animal and human cruelty in this world with out having it all over the Internet. Thanks to Dave Keating for highlighting this horrid video

i dont care if what im about to say disrespects the marine, or the "men and women who fight for our freedom" we have freedom and i dont think throwing puppies off cliffs really helps us in any way shape or form. this guy, whoever he is, thought he was being really funny and i beg to differ, and im sure a lot of other people do to. obviously this puppy was alive because you CAN infact here it yelping. its yelps were a cry for help and i could only watch that video once because of them. i am only 15 years old and many of you may think that i dont know anything and whatever, but your wrong. i have a lot of strong opinions that arent going to change. for one, i am completely against animal cruelty. and seeing this video made me even more proud to be a vegan. everything deserves life and unfortunetly this puppy did not get to live. it looked very young. and i know that hate is a strong word, but i dont care. i hate this guy. i hope he gets shot and never ever gets to stand in honor of our counrty. he is a disgrace and i hope he burns in hell
