Virginia Beach "Meteor": Unexplained Light in the Sky
Residents of Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Virginia, heard a mysterious boom and saw a flash of light, the cause of which are still unknown.
The reigning theory (on the Internet, anyway) is a meteor. The National Weather Service says that it wasn't weather-based.
Calls from local residents to 911 began coming in at around 9:45 p.m. EDT, with some people reporting their doors and windows rattled when the boom went off, according to reports from WVEC-TV.
10:25 p.m. - Joe in Virginia Beach: At around 10 PM our time a rather Large BOOM took place. Shook the HOUSE. I called Police and they said they are looking and trying to find source, and had no further info. Shortly after call I hard 2 consecutive Booms that were not as Strong as the first. Close to Pleasant Valley, Indian Lakes, and Farrell PKY.
10:28 p.m. - Duane in Williamsburg: Subject- house shaking in williamsburg. I saw a flare flying through the air about 45 minutes ago. It should have landed between big bethel road and Hardy cash drive. Maybe close to comander sheppard/simple farm road. This was unusual. I stayed outside to listen for a noise, but on noise and nothing else.
10:31 p.m. - Carl in Virginia Beach: IS THE WORLD ENDING???

How is that nobody has a picture of this thing? The weather cameras, traffic camera, even cameras on building could not capture this mysterious ball of light. Sounds like a cover up to me. How come NASA or the military have no idea what happened. I live by Oceana and I saw it clear as day. That's really close to two military bases for them not to know what it was. Not to mention we are in the midst of a war so this is surely a eye brow raiser. Scientist watch the skys for this kind of thing so you can't tell me noone has an explanation. I'm sure they are trying to prevent nationwide panic, but at least tell us it was a meteorite as opposed to silence.

The object broke up in the atmosphere and was not a threat to land on anyone, just like 99.9% of the meteors that enter our atmosphere. You might see a lot of light, the light is the object breaking and burning up and the sound (sonic boom) is the object entering the lowest layer of the atmosphere above the speed of sound. Does it really matter what it was? Things fall from space all the time, but usually land in the ocean. The object in question most likely burned up about 30 miles or more above the ocean, but was seen by observers who thought it was much closer.
There was some video of the meteor breakup which proves it was a meteor. Watch this video and watch the hood of the van in the bottom right hand corner.

Fellow from the Naval Observatory is quoted as saying he's 99.4% sure it was the second stage of the Soyuz launch from last week that resupplied the ISS.

Just prior to hearing the big boom, I witnessed a large sparkling ball of light falling in the sky. It lasted for several seconds. I actually thought some one had shot off some type of fireworks, but there was no sound...until at least a minute later. It was then that the boom came, so loud that the ground shook.

The Space station is still up there.
Well, I suppose the pentagon will make up an explanation soon.

my friend and I were riding beach cruisers on the boardwalk when the whole sky lit up, and what we thought was just a firework streaked through the sky about 100 ft. off the shore. It couldnt have been any higher than the hotels. We didnt even think anything of it, we were so deep in our convorsation. It must have been a minute later when heard this "so called" boom. We thought it was thunder and figured a storm was coming. another minute after that, we both felt a very light drizzle that couldnt have lasted for more than 10 seconds. it was barely noticable. Now, Im hearing everybodies talking about how this thing was seen from norfolk??? This seems crazy. I wonder if that was even rain. I suppose it would make sense, if it was a missile and it was destroyed miles above our heads, that it would take about a minute for us to hear the blast, and we might see flaming debree fall...wait. no, that wouldnt make sense. why would it take longer for sound to travel than the debree. nah, it cant be that. hmmmm...none of it makes any sense. the best i can come up with is: meteor, thunderstorm, slight drizzle...

My wife and I were driving Sunday night in the area of Flint Hill Va and saw something, a (white) flare like ball drop almost drift to the ground a couple hundred feet from the road. Start to finish, the event lasted less than one minute. but felt longer. Very odd.

I saw the thing coming out of Mechanicsville Virginia near Richmond. As large as it was and the fact that it was pretty intact (dang thing look like a comet coming down), it's probably in someone's field out in either Smith or New Kent Counties.
Man, I thought we were under attack. Thank goodness. I about wrecked the car.

I was driving east on 58 when I saw the clouds light up like it was lightning. Seconds after the whole sky turned bright blue followed by a large white ball with a long tail of orange and blue fire. The tail was long enough to where the white ball had passed below the herizon and the tail was still high in the atmosphere. Must say, it was probobly one of the coolest things I have seen.

I cannot believe in this day and age where we have hundreds of cameras everywhere - on top of the building at Town Center, Virginia Beach, on top of several buildings in the downtown Norfolk & Portsmouth, traffic cams, weather cams, phone cams, etc. that there is not any video footage of this event. All of the local TV stations have cameras everywhere to monitor weather. Why don't these stations have any footage to share with the public?
