Visitors to a zoo in Japan have been concerned about green polar bears thinking they maybe sick or have mold on them. The green fur is caused by algae growth in the bears pond and is hard to shake off.

A polar bear, its fur stained with algae, stands in its cage at Higashiyama Zoo in Nagoya, central Japan, Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008. Three polar bears at the zoo changed their colors in July after swimming in a pond with an overgrowth of algae, prompting many questions from visitors concerned about whether the animals are sick or carrying mold, a zoo official said. (AP Photo/Kyodo News, Shuzo Shikano)AP - Green-colored polar bears are drawing questions from puzzled visitors at a Japanese zoo.

The hair of a polar bear looks white because the air spaces in each hair scatter light of all colors. The color white becomes visible to our eyes when an object reflects back all of the visible wavelengths of light, rather than absorbing some of the wavelengths.

At one time it was suggested that the polar bear hairs might have some of the properties of optical fibers. Apparently this is not the case. See the following Web sites for information and additional links:

Scientists in the late 1970’s discovered another interesting tidbit about polar bears. A number of polar bears in zoos from around the world were turning green! These scientists discovered that the algae responsible for making the bears green were not on the SURFACE of the hairs, as originally supposed, but were INSIDE the hairs (Lewin & Robinson, 1979). The algae more than likely came from the pond waters in the bears’ enclosures.

Aussie the Green Polar Bear, originally uploaded by Asten. Microscopic Algae gets into the hollow hairs and turns them green in the summer. It's harmless and goes away in the fall/winter.

Aww. Green polar bears :(

I read somewhere that in fact polar bear fur is not white, but transparent, but it usually looks white because of their ice-filled environment. Though in this case it sounds like the algae just got stuck.

It's nothing to worry about seems like it goes in the Autumn, like you say Rachel is just stuck algae, transparent fur! good one for April 1st I think.

Oops! I think you are right about the fur sort of, seems it has air spaces in it, I have added a bit to the post about it.

Somewhere, we have old family home movies from back in the Sixties of the green polar bears at the San Antonio Zoo.  Apparently, a common problem, especially in warmer climes.  Maybe it's getting warmer at the other zoos now.

Thanks dunkelberg, perhaps the less green we are the more green the bears will be!
