Inspired VERY loosely from an old Quicksilver Messenger Service cover. The future has gotten a lot more dystopian now.

The day after Thanksgiving is called Black Friday in the retail industry. The stores count on the sudden mass shopping binge to put them into profit for the year. The media and the politicians talk it up. It has become positively patriotic to rush out before dawn Friday morning and run up your credit card balance for another year. I'm not joking. We are told it fights world extremism and all that, because it keeps the economy going.
What it keeps is the middle class in debt and the massive overconsumption ruining our planet.
Therefore, for a number of years now, the Friday after Thanksgiving has been recognized as Planetary Buy Nothing Day. It used to be covered on CNN, etc, along with the shopping rush, but today it's considered positively un-American. You never hear about it any more, but it's still there, and a handful of progressive people still observe it.

Keep in mind there's still another whole month where no one will care if you buy out the whole mall, and you'll probably get lower prices anyway.
