Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) personally intervened on Friday into a forum by Peter Peterson's ``Comeback America Initiative,'' to slam its efforts to shove austerity down the throats of Social Security and Medicare recipients as a recipe for curing the budget deficit.

Sanders intervened into a forum that the Peterson group sponsored at St. Anselm's College in Manchester, New Hampshire, kicking off a nationwide college tour by the group. Sanders told the attendees at the Comeback America Initiative forum:

``The American people should not be fooled by the misinformation that will be spread at these grassroots gatherings backed by some of the most powerful Wall Street, insurance, and corporate CEOs in the country.

The goal of these town meetings is to convince the people of New Hampshire and the rest of America that the only effective way to address the deficit crisis is to balance the budget on the backs of the elderly, the children, the sick, and the poor.

Don't believe it!''

Despite the tremendous success of Social Security, it has become a favored target of Peter G. Peterson, the hedge fund billionaire who has pledged $1 billion of his own money on a campaign to cut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. It was Peterson who provided most of the funding for the operation of the Comeback America Initiative, according to its website. David Walker, who headed Peterson's foundation, now runs the initiative.

Since no one is advocating "that the only effective way to address the deficit crisis is to balance the budget on the backs of the elderly, the children, the sick, and the poor", it's a very pathetic strawman argument.

Though there seems to be a large percentage of people [Democrats] heavily invested in seeing that these entitlements die through fiscal and policy mismanagement rather than take any steps whatsoever to stem the bleeding. 16 trillion debt load. tick tock, tick tock, tick tock.

How about seizing funds from offshore bank accounts?  That wouldn't impact you, would it?
