Travis, household chimp and star of TV commercials, had gotten loose in his owner's house. When the owner, Sandra Harold, called her friend Charla Nash to help get the 170-lb chimp under control, Travis the chimp attacked Sandra while both women fought him off.
The chimp was shot to death by police once they arrived on scene.
Both women are in the hospital.
Charla Nash, 55, had been attacked by the chimp, Travis, after she went to Sandra Herold's house to help the woman get Travis back into the house. The chimp had used a key to get out of the house and after Herold was unsuccessful in luring the chimp back into the house she had called Nash.
"Travis" the chimp, who is now dead after the victim stabbed him with a butcher knife, was with his handler when he somehow got loose in Stamford, Connecticut.
A primatologist at the Bronx Zoo has commented:
"It's deceiving to think that if any animal is, quote-unquote, well-behaved around humans that means there is no risk involved to humans for potential outbursts of behavior," she said. "They are unpredictable, and in instances like this you cannot control that behavior or prevent it from happening if it is in a private home."
