NP Rank:
'Younger wife' for marital bliss
The secret to a happy marriage for men is choosing a wife who is smarter and at least five years younger than you, say UK experts. These pairings are more likely to go the distance, particularly if neither has been divorced in the past, according to the Bath University team.
I'm never quite sure what to make of pieces of research like this (their pointlessness is a whole other debate). When I read these findings first, they struck me perpetuating the typically inane 'women-should-always-be-purdy-and-young' nonsense. But perhaps it redeems itself by its mention of the importance of intelligence.
The piece doesn't indicate why couples are less likely to get divorced if the woman is smarter and younger than her husband, there is no mention of what works in same-sex marriages, and I haven't a clue what variables or research questions these conclusions are based upon, but for a Monday night, when I'm tired and have sore eyes, this gave me the giggles I was after.

5 yrs younger has pretty much been the standard recommended age gap ever since I was a kid, so this info is nothing new. As for intelligence, it has always been (as far as how I was raised) that the husband IS the head of the house, BUT he gets his wife's 2 cents of feedback before making a decision. What good usually, is feedback from someone dumber than yourself?
So the whole survey is basically old hat.
Now on the other hand, if she's just barely legal and you're an old guy, it's just all about the sex and you don't give a flippin *&^%$ about her intelligence, so long as she's a freak between the sheets. lol

It's not old hat to me. I'd never heard of either of these things before.

Well, praise the Gods, that's not how I was raised. How lucky the little wife is to be allowed her two cents before an important decision is made!

No mention at all of "purdy" or "younger" in the article. Younger is a relative term, and the differences in looks between two groups five years apart, would be barely discernible - excepting the age difference. The variety, ranging from say stunning, to homely, would remain the same.

No, it didn't mention 'purdy' but the implication is frequently that the female 'younger' is synonymous with beauty, while the female 'older' is synonymous with a lack of beauty. That was my point.
