2008 Emmy Awards: Red Carpet Trends

The 2008 Primetime Emmy Awards took place on September 21, and while the show itself may have been a bit of a bore the red carpet provided plenty of material to ogle.

As we switch gears into Fall, formal and full-length gowns graced the stars at LA's Shrine Auditorium.  Notable trends include bright and bold colours, loose "bed-head" hair, and strapless gowns.

Canary yellow, bright fuschia, royal purple and bright reds were big colours on stars like Nicollette Sheridan, Holly Hunter, Brooke Shields, Mariska Hargitay, Teri Hatcher, Saffron Burrows, Laura Dern and Melora Hardin - even Jimmy Kimmel sported a bright blue tie.

Sandra Oh looked stunning in her black lace Oscar de la Renta gown, worn with loose upswept curls - I suspect she will make it onto numerous "Emmy Best Dressed" lists.  There was a considerable amount of black on the runway, but the only other star who pulled it off impeccably was America Ferrera in a vintage bubble-hem dress, complimented by siren-red lipstick.

A couple of the ladies from Dexter took advantage of a dress-up opportunity; Jennifer Carpenter, who plays Dexter's cop sister in the show, wore a stunning red and orange strapless gown, while Julie Benz looked glamorous in a curvacious purple gown belted at the waist.

Catherine Keener and Grace Park both went the pants route but still looked fantastic, and a couple of guests deserve nods for their sound fashion choices: Stephen Colbert's wife Evelyn McGee turned heads in strapless navy, while Jon Hamm's girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt wore a beautiful cream gown with plunging neckline.

Lost's Evangeline Lilly was radiant in gold, and Cynthia Nixon also caught my attention with her pastel green gown that was entirely appropriate for her skin tone and hair colour.

Eva Longoria-Parker's sparkly mini dress has garnered quite a bit of attention in the media, but the only points I'm giving her are for matching to husband Tony Parker's suit.
