Doctors around North America should expect a spike in cases of Brain freeze Wednesday as Free Slurpee Day 2012 approaches. Free Slurpee Day is something of an unofficial holiday for those who like Slurpees and also like not paying for stuff. The ubiquitous convenience store is offering free Slurpees on July 7 (7/7/12) as a thank-you to its customers.

Free Slurpee Day at 7 Eleven is honored at stores in the US and Canada. An estimated 5 million frozen, slushy drinks will be given away, not taking into account the high temperatures across the US. The Slurpee has several million fans on Facebook. The Slush Puppy only has 1,888 fans?! Can that be right?

Founded in 1927, some say that the store gets its name from its founding date. July 11 is only the company's unofficial birthday though: Originally called Tote-'em, "7 Eleven" was chosen for its reflection of being open 7am to 11pm, seven days a week. Now it seems that most are open 24 hours a day.
