Remember the controversy around the Polish Plumber in France, it now seems that the UK has to rely more and more on the Polish Waiter (and other eastern Europeans) to do the job.
This is the message I got from English lose the appetite for a career in waiting (Martin Hickman, The Independent).
In a survey by Square Meal, customers seem to blame poor service on this new breed of waiters.

leconcierge, I like this story.
Some Brits think the salary is a pittance and they can earn more elsewhere.. unless of course, the customers are 'good tippers'.
Some waiting staff in the UK still only earn the minimum wage of around £5.35 an hour and don't have even have payrises or every year (like bank staff etc) - how can people save up for a home, pension and family on that? The Sanderson Hotel (a well known hotel in London) wanted their bar staff only to 'earn just over £2 an hour'.. the rest apparently.. 'would be on tips' if they're lucky. Sometimes waiters don't earn tips even though the clients say the service is good and can afford a few pounds.
