The first annual Cupcake Smackdown was held in Austin, TX yesterday.  An estimated crowd of over 500 jammed into the One2One Bar on 5th Street to sample and purchase cupcakes from a variety of local purveyors.

The Smackdown included contests for best cupcakes from caterers, storefront owners and amateurs, as well as a cupcake eating contest for humans and a "pupcake" eating contest for dogs.  There was also a silent auction with proceeds benefiting the Wine and Food Foundation of Texas.

I make cupcakes and they rock!  When are we going to get a Cupcakeathon in Britain?

The organizer had no idea how many people would show up, and it turned out to be nearly 1,000!  It was a blast.  My favorite part was watching the faces of the judges as they struggled to sample up to 27 types of cupcakes in the 100 degree (F) heat.
