One of the landmark hotels in Bangkok certainly has to be the Sofitel Centara Grand Bangkok, located in the Chatuchak area of the city amidst the thriving business area on Phaholyothin Road. Opened in 1983, the location of the hotel at that time was thought to be a bit risky since the conventional wisdom then was that only downtown hotels could be really successful. Twenty five years later that assumption has obviously been put to rest as the 607-room hotel has proven to be steadily profitable over the years. It can count among its amenities an Italian restaurant, a Vietnamese restaurant, a Thai restaurant, a Chinese restaurant a Japanese restaurant, a spa and a fitness club.

There are probably a number of reasons why the hotel has proven to be a success but one of them has to be the location. It has really grown into its own and it has given the hotel the added dimension of being a choice corporate and meeting destination. Another reason was the development of both the adjoining shopping center and also the Bangkok Convention Center which added a unique dimension to the property. In all, counting the convention center, the hotel can offer up to 12,542 square meters of space including also the ballroom in the hotel and multiple smaller function rooms.

One more reason for the hotel’s success is the management of both the hotel and the overall group, Centara Hotels and Resorts. I’ve become familiar with many of the top people at Centara over the years, as well as many other hotels in town for that matter, and the Centara people are smart, experienced and seem to always have a very well-focused plan for the future. Two examples of this forward thinking, the same that led them to build the Sofitel Centara Grand 25 years ago, are the newly opened Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Center next to the CentralWorld shopping center in downtown Bangkok and the fantastic new oceanside complex under construction in Pattaya which promises to be one of the most amazing hotel properties in the country.

So what can you expect if you stay at the Sofitel Centara? First you’ll have a good selection of room types from deluxe up to the luxurious Presidential Suite. And all of the rooms have five-star amenities throughout including broadband high-speed internet access in all guest rooms, a voice mail facility controlled air-conditioning, smoke detectors and sprinklers, in-house and pay per view movies, radio and in-house movie programs, a safe, refrigerator, mini-bar and a telephone with direct international dialing. Also, there are 13 non-smoking floors and four floors of the exclusive Dynasty Club.

And, being affiliated with Accor, the hotel’s guests are eligible for worldwide benefits via the “Sofitel Priviledged Guest” loyalty program, plus rewards from frequent flyer programs of numerous international airlines.

The location, from a transp[ortation standpoint, offers convenient access to both downtown and the Suvarnabhumi International Airport, only 20 minutes and 30 minutes to both destinations respectively by expressway. And it’s only 10 minutes to Donmuang Airport for some domestic flights. The Skytrain (BTS) station at Mor Chit for quick access to the downtown areas is a 5 minutes drive from the hotel and the subway (MRT) is conveniently located next to Central Department store, only a few minutes walk.

There are many other features that make this a top-class property such as a business center, a flower shop, gift shop, 24-hour medical service and a lot more. One thing is for sure, you won’t be taking a risk when you stay here since you’ll have 25 years of experience here backed up by great management.
