Cosplay and Halloween: A Bit of Overlap for 2010
This story is prompted by a comment in the Halloween Costume Ideas and Trends story: someone wanted to see a list of Cosplay-for-Halloween ideas. Okay, we'll see what we can do.
Cosplay (from "costume play"), in a nutshell, is the act of dressing up as a favorite comic book or cartoon character. You most often see cosplayers at comic conventions such as Comic-Con, though you'll find them anywhere that sci-fi and manga fans congregate. Tokyo has cafes dedicated to cosplay.
The cosplay concept sounds like stereotypical Tokyo culture, and the name is Japanese-derived, but cosplay was apparently first noticed in 1980s America.
So cosplay is not a Halloween thing, but a fanboy/-girl thing. However, will that stop people from pulling elaborate costume ideas from their favorite manga/anime/sci-fi? Hell, no. So let's start with some ideas that would be Halloween-friendly: people will recognize your subject, and you'll be able to move around.
List of Cosplay Halloween Ideas
- Naruto (pastel ninjas)
- Metroid (NES classic- great for girls)
- Ghostbusters!
- Sailor Moon (you saw this one coming)
- Macross/Robotech (like most anime, this would require extra attention to hair)
- Street Fighter (Chun Li is very popular)
- Death Note (L would be fairly easy, but attention to detail would be crucial; Ryuk would be very Halloween-friendly)
- God of War (shirt not required, but hit the gym first)
- How about... zombies? (In fact, go big: Zombie Lady Gaga)
With cosplay, attention to detail is the most important part: slapping something together out of cardboard in ten minutes won't cut it. Another thing to consider: taking a hardcore cosplay outfit to a typical Halloween party may be met with questioning stares if your subject is someone from an obscure cyborg ninja comic. Just be ready for a steady stream of "what are you supposed to be?"
Ladies, just remember: anime girls are not real, and thus their proportions are equally unrealistic... and are mostly drawn by guys.
We want to hear from you, though: if you're a cosplay participant, what are your prep tricks? How long does it take you to put an elaborate outfit together? How do you get your hair to stay up?

Costume Play): A very popular activity during anime conventions, also referred to as masquerading. It consists of dressing up as an anime or video game character to participate in contests or simply for fun
