What the Onion is to news, Worldwide Womenswear Digest is to fashion news.  Women's Wear Daily is one of the premiere sources for industry news, gossip, runway photos and the inside scoop on everything to do with fashion.  A spoof version of WWD (which is available both in print and online), aptly titled WWWWD, was emailed to numerous editors toward the end of New York's Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

The cover story, "Shoes are Back!" is quick to procure a few laughs by explaining that shoes were "all over the runways" and therefore were "cemented as Spring 2009's must-have item."  Fashionistas can safely say goodbye to the "barefoot trend that defined 2008," assures 'writer' Leonid Mansvetashvili (interestingly, when I copy and paste the name from the PDF version, it appears as "LeOnID ManSVetaShVILI" reporting from "parIS" on "the retUrn OF a CLaSSIC" - is this a clue??)

Other headlines include:

  • Exclusive: Gossip Girl actually Donatella Versace
  • The (Fashion) Queen of America: Suri Cruise
  • Dior Tries Sandwich Boards in Wake of Global Advertising Cutbacks
  • Bee Shaffer Shocked to Learn Most Parents Don’t Have Yearly Hug Limits

The industry job listings are a riot (Naomi Campbell needs a new assistant - please contact iamnaomicampbelldonotfuckwithme@gmail.com), the fake parties of the week photos are hilariously contrived, and a poll reveals that 65% of respondents would go back into a burning house to save vintage Hermes over children or pets.

We can only hope this is a weekly or monthly edition and not a one-time spoof.  The fashion industry sorely needs a reason to laugh.

It is so far unclear who is behind the spoof magazine.

Brilliant! I love WWWWD. I hope they keep producing it- we need humour like this in the fashion industry :)
