FDA Approves Latisse Eyelash Thickener
Allergan Inc. has acquired the right to sell an eyelash-thickening agent, Latisse, after the FDA approved its sale and use today. Allergan is the maker of Botox, an injection that smooths wrinkles.
Latisse contains the same main ingredient as Allergan's Lumigan, on the market for glaucoma since 2001.
The Irvine, Calif., company is targeting Latisse at the $3.7 billion-a-year global market for mascara.
Latisse, chemically known as bimatoprost, is applied to the base of the eyelashes to improve their length, thickness and color.
Latisse is the first product that promotes eyelash growth, and will be available in the early months of 2009.
Users of the glaucoma eyedrops Lumigan, also made by Allergan, found that one of the side-effects of the drops was longer, fuller and darker eyelashes. However, in addition to fuller lashes, Latisse may permanently alter the pigmentation of the iris and cause darkening of the eyelid skin.
It may also promote hair growth in other skin areas that it touches, so users will have to be careful to remove the product if it gets anywhere else on skin if they want to avoid growing hair there.

Possible side effects - SIDE EFFECTS, that may go away during treatment, include burning, stinging, dry eyes, feeling of a foreign body in the eye, weakness, or headache. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience a change in vision; any change in the appearance of the eyes, including redness, itching, swelling, or pain; redness on the inside of eyelid; or fever with runny nose or congestion.
Bimatoprost may slowly cause permanent darkening of the eye (iris), eyelid, and eyelashes.
Growth and/or thickening of the eyelashes may also occur. Contact your doctor for more details. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Lumigan is used for: Treating increased pressure in the eye (ocular hypertension) and open-angle glaucoma. Bimatoprost ophthalmic reduces pressure in the eye by increasing the amount of fluid that drains from the eye. Bimatoprost ophthalmic is used to treat certain types of glaucoma and other causes of high pressure inside the eye.

General rule, if there is any side effects that may hurt the eyes, I would like to stay away from. I would rather have the eyelashes I was born with than to take a risk of losing my site. Mascara works just fine.

I started using Latisse friday night. It is now sunday night and I noticed my eyelids looked like i had a dark eyeliner on or makeup that wasn't washed off. I looked online and found it's a side effect. It"s kinda scary if it wont go away. I have heard this can happen over time, but it's only been two nights!

Eek, that is scary! Let us know how it goes over time. Personally, I'd rather stick with regular mascara and shorter lashes than have dark pigmentation appear around my eyes, possibly forever.
