The Golden Gate Bridge is a San Francisco landmark that is famous around the world and on May 27, 2009 the long span suspension bridge turns 27.  Happy Birthday Golden Gate Bridge!!

The Golden Gate Bridge was named after the water way it spans at the opening connecting the San Francisco Bay to the Pacific Ocean.  It is part of US Interstate Route 101 and California State Route 1.

When the Golden Gate Bridge was first opened on May 27, 2009 the it was the longest suspension bridge in the world, spanning 8,981 feet (2.74 kms).  It's longest single span is 4,700 feet making it the second place record holder for the longest single span in the US.

Turning 72-years-old today, the Golden Gate Bridge celebrates another year as San Francisco's most notable landmark. The bridge-opening party kicked off on May 27, 1937, lasting for one week.

Being a Gemini, the (in)famous bridge is, of course, riddled with duality. To see its grand side, check out the awesome aerial footage above. To view its grim side, watch The Bridge, Eric Steel's brilliant and groundbreaking documentary that tells the stories of a few locals who committed suicide at the Golden Gate Bridge in 2004 -- capturing them, if you will, as they take the final jump. (Warning: Not for the faint of heart.)

When I was a kid, a kid who looked at black and white TV, I thought that the bridge was painted gold, which would have come out the same gray as the lead-red that it has.

I was surprised when I first saw it and saw "red". A bit of a shock.

Shot high above the city of San Francisco, this image was captured on an uncharacteristically warm and clear night in the Bay Area. This image and others shot by Joe Ercoli can be seen at http://www.anvilimage.com.

Last year myself and a friend embarked on a 3month backpacking trip around the USA, New Zealand and Australia. This image was taken on our 1st night in San Francisco after having spent a few hours driving around scouting for a good location. We were lucky enough to find a nice, quiet spot by the Pier and waited for the sun to set. It was definitely a memorable city and one of our favourite stops on the trip.

I took this with my iPhone. i walked across the bridge for the first time with my friend. I recently moved here, in January of 2009.
I love this bridge. I can't believe it took me so long to finally visit it!

I am a Golden Gate Bridge fan. I traveled to the Bay area on May 6 and took this photo traveling across the bridge. It was a beautiful clear day that made me grateful to be experiencing the bridge.

This photo was taken just before sunset on the Sausalito side of the S.F. bay. Noone told us how cold the breeze off the Pacific would be! What a sight!

I remember taking this sometime in the month of August. I couldn't believe how windy and cold it was up there.

P.S. Thank you, Tina, for asking me to include this photo in your story. Otherwise, I would have not discovered this awesome web community!

I grew up in Marin County, and after 54 years, never tire of the wonderful views while crossing the bridge, including, of course, of the great bridge itself.

I took the attached image a couple of years ago the first time I took my twin boys, age four at the time, for a walk on the bridge. It was a warm, glorious October day, and I could remember some of my earliest excursions on the bridge with my own, late father, who was an architect who enjoyed telling me and my siblings stories about the bridge and its history.

As a child I also remember when the auto toll was something like 35 cents (or was it 15?) and my dad sometimes let us reach out of the window and toss it into the red screen bins!

I took this photo during a walk across the bridge with a friend I'd finally gotten to visit me in San Francisco. It was one of those rare beautiful sunny days when you actually can see the city. The clouds were racing overhead and I liked the way the lines of the bridge came in and out of focus through the wisps. Also wanted to capture all those rivets - the bridge amazes me with its engineering every time I see it up close.

There's a typo in the above copy. ..."the long span suspension bridge turns 27"... That should be 72. Also in he third paragraph, "Bridge was first opened on May 27, 2009..." you got the year wrong. You really may want to proof read before posting.
