Gucci Rocks 'Boho-Deluxe' Gypsy Chic
Tapestries, gypsies, and cross-stitching at Gucci? I'm still stuck on the big gold glam of interlocking G's and sleek, svelte silhouettes. Recycle them rock clichés!
The vast Ukrainian-patterned carpet said it all about the boho-deluxe theme at Gucci on Wednesday. The designer Frida Giannini had taken her decorative ideas - tapestry patterns, cross-stitch decoration, gilt studs and fringing - all the way back to Bohemia. Her collection of skinny hip pants, fancied up with metallic extras, were worn with snug jackets, where embedded in the thick fur you could find elements of Toy Town army uniforms or the kind of embroidery that gypsy Romas might have stitched around the campfire.
This Ruritanian rock 'n' roll was open to every cliché: "Rock the Czech Republic!" "Blonde models have a lot of polish!"
But then Giannini is a cliché designer. Nothing is too obvious to bring to her theme of the season. And within those limitations - and the fact that these clothes, merry with embellishments, often looked like Roberto Cavalli's once did - it was a gush of gold for Gucci.
The accessories alone were covetable winners: the most posh carpet bag you could ever find; boots scattered with studs or those dangling suede fringes; jewelry jingling to the loud music.
