You should think about Vietnam and Cambodia as the chance to do the undoable. The new landscapes and take on life in East Asia allows you to live life in an entirely different way, if just for a couple of weeks. Taking the chance to eat, dress and talk like a local from Vietnam and Cambodia will bring you stories and memories that you would be hard-pressed to find anywhere else.

Vietnam in particular has some amazing options for tours. For instance, the River Tonle is a rather popular tourist attraction. Every year, thousands of holidaymakers cruise up the river to see temples on the banks, while also to see the floating markets of Cai Be. These obscure stalls can be accessed by sailing, and all of the deals and bargaining is done in traditional wooden boats. Literally everything is on water and paying a visit will allow you to meet people from the local community who have gone to the stalls to bargain for good deals on food and their luxury products.

One other intriguing place that attracts tourists in large numbers is Sapa. Many a tour company provides excursions through the area, which is well-known for its memorable market experience. Stalls are adorned with colourful dresses, headscarves and peaked hats and other vivid clothing items. Meanwhile, the horse-drawn carriages provide a very different kind of transport to that of Cai Be.

Visiting Sapa may make you feel like you have stepped into a whole new world and the experience is an extremely worthwhile part of a tour. To experience the culture of Vietnam, there is nothing better than visiting local places in this way. It goes without saying it's ten times better than reading the sights, sounds and tastes in a book and unimaginably better than a holiday spent sitting at the side of a pool.
