Hot pink: It's so hot right now

Today when I came to work I was suddenly inspired by "Hot Pink" and for some reason: Men's shirts.

Hot pink has invaded the fashion industry.

Every day more and more people are wearing more and more pink. Students at the University of Illinois at Chicago are an obvious reflection of the latest trend.

All major designers have thrown in either some pink or a lot of pink into their spring fashion collections. Big time designer Donna Karen seems to have taken hot pink head on and added the color to all kinds of clothing. The runways this year are sporting pink in everything.

"I first noticed the color trend on TV," second-year business major Swati Shah said. "I own a bunch of things in pink. I have shirts, a hat, and a bra in pink."

Yes, that's right. Pink has even taken over the clothes that are supposed to go under the clothes and Victoria's Secret is leading the pack.

"Hot pink is definitely in. In fact, our 'Valentine's Day' will be associated with pink as well as the usual red," Victoria's Secret spokesman Sara Tervo said. "In fact, we have a new collection of major fashion that will be geared toward shoppers between the ages of 18-22 called 'Pink.' There is some red in the collection but most of it is pink."

Swimwear will be adorning the color as well. "There will be a lot of hot pink in our swim wear and summer wear," Tervo said.

But was hot pink already around, just gone unnoticed? Zulema Anaya, a sophomore business major, thinks so.

"My hair was dyed hot pink months before this whole pink flush started. I already had clothes in hot pink. I like hot pink. In fact, I only like hot pink of all florescent colors," Anaya said.

On the other hand, English major Emaan Nafees disagrees. "I don't like florescent colors. The mellow, calm pink is better. Hot pink is just more proof that the 80's are coming back."

Nafees does bring about a good argument. Are the 80's coming back? Hot pink was a big part of the decade. Most undergraduate students can remember the 80's enough to point out the main aspects of the decade like the one-glove, the big hair, leg-warmers and Prince. And if Prince is back, the 80's are following.

Hollister manager Jay Bonnamy at Woodfield Mall acknowledges that the decade is back. "A lot of men's and women's clothing are shaped in 80's fashion. Half of our T-shirts are 80's style. Legwarmers were even out in fashion last summer. I don't think the 80's will come back full fledged, but it will be a big influence."

Tervo agrees. "The 80's are influencing new styles. Our 'Lady By Victoria' series now has glittery spandex and leggings and a number of other things reminiscent of the 80's but with a modern look."

"It was bound to happen," Averi Escalona, a junior education major, said. "The fashion industry constantly brings back fashions from past decades. I'm not too crazy about the 80's fashion, but I do like the music."

Hot pink does seem to only be a girl thing, though.

GQ magazine confirmed that men and hot pink just don't seem to mix very well. But for those of the male species who have found that perfect hot pink shirt or hot pink pants, way to go.
