How To Choose A Home Improvement Contractor
There are a multitude of home improvement projects and possibilities for maintaining your home. While many you may be capable of doing yourself, others may require the expertise of an experienced contractor. This is especially true for large scale jobs that require special tools and years of knowledge. Following these guidelines should ensure that you find a professional who will do a good job.
Getting Started
Typically, you will want to go one of two routes to begin your search. Asking friends, family or co-workers for recommendations will often prove fruitful and you can get a first hand testimony of a contractor's quality level. Otherwise, it's usually best to look online for different contractors in your area. Doing a simple search on Google should give you quick access to the top rated companies in your area.
Narrowing It Down
After looking at a few potential candidates, you should narrow your search down to three or four. To get a better idea of each contractor's level of professionalism, it's smart to look for reviews and/or testimonies from unbiased customers. Many times, these will pop up in search engine results and you can get a quick feel for each company. If you're still skeptical, you can even check with the Better Business Bureau for more information. Look for contractors with a minimal amount of complaints to ensure the best service.
Contact
Once you have a few candidates in mind, you should contact each one and ask some key questions. This includes finding out their experience level in the type of project you need done, asking if they have proper insurance, asking if they're fully licensed and asking about guarantees or warranties for their work. You should never hire anyone without insurance or being licensed because they might be amateur and do more harm than good. Not to mention, you could end up being liable if an employee gets injured during the job. It's also ideal to have some type of guarantee on the project. This will protect you in case something goes wrong after the job is completed.
References
It's also smart to ask each contractor for two or three references that you can contact. Any reputable company should have no problem with this, so be wary of anyone who can't provide any references. You should then call or email those references and ask what they think about the contractor.
Pricing
Finally, you should ask for an estimate for the cost of the project. In some cases, this can be done over the phone. If it's a massive project that's complex in nature, then you will usually want a contractor to come by and take a look before making an estimate. Once you find someone who fits your price range and you feel comfortable with them, then you have likely found the right contractor for the job.
