How To Get a Satin Scorpion Jacket like Ryan Gosling's in 'Drive'
Ryan Gosling's Outfit in Drive: Guaranteed to be a Halloween 2011 Trend
Okay, so you saw Drive. You probably loved it (unless you're Sarah Deming), and the soundtrack is stuck in your head. If you're a guy (or a girl with short blonde hair), you're considering going as The Driver for Halloween this year, because that scorpion jacket rules. Good call.
You won't be alone, though, since the scorpion jacket costume is sure to be a trend for Halloween 2011. The way to get the edge at your Halloween party: get the details right.
That Awesome Silver Scorpion Jacket
The RPF has reference photos of Ryan Gosling's costume from Drive, but let's start with the badass scorpion jacket. Steady Clothing licensed the satin scorpion jacket, which was inspired by those 1950s Korean souvenir jackets.
You can make your own, though: you can find a silver or grey shiny jacket at many thrift stores, or something similar at American Apparel or H&M. Either find a scorpion patch or make one yourself with a silkscreen.
The actual scorpion jacket, while it has a thrift-store vibe, was custom built by Richard Lim. It's quilted on the back, which will be tough to approximate with off-the-rack stand-ins.
The Driver's Jeans, Denim Jacket, T-shirt
Ryan Gosling wears skinny jeans and a denim jacket as well: his are Levi's, but any brand will do, as long as they're tight. The shirt is a white henley t-shirt.
The Watch and gloves from Drive
The Driver wears a Patek Phillipe watch, but any simple analog watch will do. Make sure it doesn't have numerals, though. The gloves are, well, driving gloves. You can find them at H&M, or any decent department store. Dark brown, not black.
The boots are by Stacy Adams: approximate with anything either white/taupe/beige/light grey. The shades: DKNY plastic Aviator shades. Again, you can approximate with gas station shades.
Overall, the look of The Driver (like everyone, everywhere, and everything in Drive) is one of retro minimalism, without any details to pin down to the actual 1980s, while still evoking that decade.
Extra points to anyone who figures out a costume to represent the elevator. You know what we mean.
CAVEAT: Rocking this look on a normal, non-Halloween day will not make you look cool. At all.
