JC Penney Pulls 'Too Pretty to Do Homework' Shirt
'Too Pretty to Do Homework' Shirt removed from JCPenny.com
Just in time for back to school, JC Penney offered a girls' shirt which said, "I'm too pretty to do homework so my brother has to do it for me". JC Penney thought that such a shirt was "Back to Cool, but, alas, the public disagreed. It's like the early-Nineties talking Barbie "Math class is tough" debacle all over again.
The product description read, "Who has time for homework when there's a new Justin Bieber album out? She'll love this tee that's just as cute and sassy as she is." US schools are in enough trouble as it is: there's no sense in promoting sexist notions such as this. We're leaving aside for the moment the shirt's atrocious design.
A petition to get the "Too pretty for homework" shirt removed from JC Penney's online store sprang up on change.org, which has over 1,600 signatures. It's unclear if the petition influenced JC Penney's decision, or if they just got wind of the overall web rage.
JC Penney's statement on the shirt:
"We agree that the “Too pretty” t-shirt does not deliver an appropriate message, and we have immediately discontinued its sale. Our merchandise is intended to appeal to a broad customer base, not to offend them. We would like to apologize for any concern we may have caused and assure you that we are taking action to ensure that we continue to uphold the integrity of our merchandise that they have come to expect."
