The 140th anniversary of the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2, 2009, will be marked by an exclusive commemorative pen from Montblanc, and critics are not impressed. Only 241 of the opulent looking Montblanc Ghandi birthday pens will be produced with a price tag of £15,500. Montblanc chose to offer only 241 of the limited edition pens in honor of the number of miles Ghandi walked on the famous Salt Satyagraha, also known as the Salt March.
The high price tag and exclusive offering of the Montblanc Ghandi pen have critics up in arms, calling it a very unsuitable tribute to the man. Ghandi stood for peace and equality, and the Montblanc pen represents classism and opulence. To many who look up to Ghandi and all he accomplished, the luxury fountain pen is far from a fitting way to honor the 140th anniversary of his birth.
Gandhi was one of history's best known non-violent activists. For Mahatma Gandhi, the pen was indeed mightier than the sword. But a luxury, limited-edition fountain pen created by Montblanc, the luxury Swiss penmaker, to commemorate the 140th anniversary of his birth today, has caused controversy for being at odds with Gandhi's simpler side.
The £15,500 pen features an engraving of Gandhi, a rhodium-plated nib, a saffron-coloured opal and a booklet of quotes from the father of Indian independence, affectionately known in India as "Bapu". The pen, which is aimed at the growing Indian market for luxury goods, also comes with an eight metre golden thread which can be wound around the pen - reminiscent of the spindle Gandhi often used.

This was posted on another thread today.
Now an Indian Court has issued notices to the Indian Union Govt., Mont Blanc International GmBH and other respondents in wake of a writ petition filed by Dijo Kappen, managing trustee of the Centre for Consumer Education at Pala in Kottayam, Kerala, India.
The petition alleges that the luxury pen which costs more than INR 13 Lakh is a derogation of national honor given the fact that Gandhi was an idol of simplicity. A bench comprising of Chief Justice S.R. Bannurmath and Justice A.K. Basheer at the Kerala High court issued the notice.
