Jeggings, Woot & More: New Words Join Concise Oxford English Dictionary

Six new words have been included in the Concise Oxford English Dictionary (COD). The following words are now officially part of the English Language. We're laughing and crying.

  • Mankini (think "Borat" and "thong")
  • Jeggings (that atrocious cross between jeans and leggings)
  • woot (should be w00t; an expression of joy that is typed rather than spoken)
  • sexting (flirty/sexualized texting)
  • retweet (to pass on a tweet-- do we really need to define this one?)
  • cyberbullying (bullying via text or social media)

We Shouldn't Be Trading Growlery for Jeggings

Since the COD is concise, some words got kicked to the curb to make room for retweet and its ilk. Say goodbye to growlery (basically, a man-cave- this word is highly relevant in 2011) and brabble (paltry, noisy quarrel-- also relevant for anyone who's seen a comment thread anywhere on the web).

We feel that the very existence of jeggings is a slap in the face to common sense and decency, and including the word in the COD will only hasten the demise of culture as we know it.

Also, we apologize for the mankini photo that just savaged your retinas.
