There is no greater holiday than National Donut Day this Friday June 5, and both Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme are taking part in the day by giving away a free donut to customers.

In honor of National Doughnut Day - oops, we mean National Donut Day - the chain said that participating stores tomorrow "will give every customer a free donut of their choice, with the purchase of any beverage, limit one per customer."

So you have to buy a beverage at Dunkin Donuts, but Krispy Kreme is giving away one of their delicious treasures for free.

National Donut Day is celebrated on the first friday in June every year and celebrates the glorious invention that is the donut (or doughnut for you traditionalists).

It began in 1938 as a fundraiser for the Chicago Salvation Army to help those in need during the Great Depression and to honour those women from World War I who used to hand out donunts to the soldiers behind the front lines in France during the war.

A legend has spread that the provision of doughnuts to US enlisted men in WWI is the origin of the term doughboy to describe US infantry, but the term was in use as early as the Mexican-American War of 1846-47.

If you have to buy a beverage at "Dunkin' Donuts" to get a "FREE" donut, then the donut isn't really "FREE"!! // The "Krispy Kreme" donuts are actually and truly FREE!!

That's true - it's really only free at Krispy Kreme, which I think is sneaky of Dunkin Donuts.

Mmmmmmm! Donuts!

Why haven't I heard of National Donut Day before?

Of course, I don't need a holiday to have one!

here&now

the donut is free even at Dunkin Donuts.. if you go in and buy a coffee any other time.. all you will get is a cup of coffee... today you get a donut with it at no extra charge... now if they are charging more today for the coffee than they do any other day.. then that would make the donut "not free".. DUH!!  enjoy the free donut and dont look "gift-horse" in the mouth!!
