National Flip Flop Day

National Flip Flop Day on June 19, 2009, is part of a campaign that raises money for Camp Sunshine, a summer camp for terminally ill kids.  Unlike so many other "national days" this one is specifically about fund raising for a worthy cause. National Flip Flop Day 2009 is the third annual event benefiting Camp Sunshine.

Summer and flip flops go hand in hand so a National Flip Flop Day to raise money for a kids summer camp is a natural fit.  National Flip Flop Day is sponsored by Tropical Smoothie Cafe in the US.  The first 500 customers to arrive at their local Tropical Smoothie Cafe wearing flip flops will get a free smoothie.

Camp Sunshine is a summer camp for children suffering from a terminal illness.  The summer camp allows sick children and their families to get away together and, for a brief time, forget about the child's illness. The goal of National Flip Flop Day is to raise awareness and funds so that terminally ill kids and their families can go to Camp Sunshine free of charge.

Families with a child diagnosed with diseases such as cancer, kidney disease, lupus, solid organ transplants, and other life threatening illnesses attend one of the week-long camps.  Our focus is on alleviating the strain that a life threatening illness takes not only on the sick child but also on other family members.  Families have an opportunity to rebuild their relationships together and meet other families facing similar challenges.

Free quality services are provided at the camp including accommodations and meals, onsite medical services, counseling services, and recreational facilities.  While the camp is in session, each family stays in their own family suite.  Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served each day.

In Canada, Tim Hortons offers a similar fundraiser called Send a Kid to Camp, called Camp Day for short.  The Send a Kid to Camp campaign is hugely successful and raises hundreds of thousands of dollars every year.  The National Flip Flop Day initiative is hoping to raise a similar amount of money.

National Flip Flop Day on June 19, 2009 falls just two days before the first day of summer on June 21 and is a fitting way to raise money for a worthy cause.... summer camp for terminally ill kids.  I can't think of a better reason to put on a pair of flip flops!

What is the significance of National Flip Flop Day & a free smoothie to the average homeschooling family during summer break?  One reason to pay attention to National Flip Flop Day is that studying fun holidays like this is a great way to spark an interest in historic days of more importance. However, National Flip Flop Day is extremely important to many families.  It actually makes life a little easier for families facing the heartache of a terminally-ill child.

National Flip Flop Day is a way for your family to help other families in need.  Even if you miss out on being one of the first 500 people to walk through the door in flip flops to receive your free smoothie, you can make a huge contribution by purchasing a paper flip flop.  National Flip Flop Day is a way to get people into Tropical Smoothie Cafe' stores to donate to help families in need send their children to Camp Sunshine.  Camp Sunshine is a camp for children with life-threatening illnesses.  It's a retreat where seriously ill children and their families can go to forget about the illnesses that overshadow every other day of their lives, if even for just a few short days.

Excellent ways to raise funds to help others in a very creative and fun manner.  Thanks for the background information on flip flop day, and related efforts by others.

Too bad it's currently too cold in Vancouver to wear flip flops - my feet are freezing today!
