NP Rank:
National Margarita Day Sunday February 22
This Sunday February 22 is National Margarita Day! Get out your tequila!
Maybe February isn't the best month — summer's still a long way off — but kicking back with a strong marg is sure to bring back memories of sunny days past and a sweet yearning for patio drinks to come.
The drink is named after a lady called 'Margarita'. It is first thought that it was invented in 1948 by socialite Margarita Sames at a party in Acapulco, when she mixed Tequila Herradura, Cointreau and lime juice together - it is now the number one cocktail in the United States.
According to a Brown-Forman study in 2008, 185,000 margaritas are consumed every hour in the United States, which means that 3% of the American population have at least one margarita every day.
The cities with the most margarita loving populations are Atlanta, Miami, St. Louis and Nashville.
The frozen margarita first appeared on the scene in 1971 when it was based on a soft-serve ice cream machine.
For a yummy frozen margarita recipe:
Ingredients
- 1 ounce Tequila Herradura Silver
- 1 ounce Cointreau
- Fresh lime juice to taste
- 1/4 ounce crushed ice
Preparation
- 1 Frost the rim of a glass with sugar.
- 2 Mix all ingredients in a blender for a few minutes.
- 3 Garnish with a lime slice.

I prefer the traditional Margarita, which is served on the rocks.
Most of us have a secret ingredient which we add to make our particular concoction special. I won't share mine, alas: the secret is too powerful.

This photo is of a 'Grado Rita.'
It is made using a new, premium brand of tequila called 'El Grado.' It is very smooth and makes GREAT margaritas!
Recipe:
1 ½ oz El Grado Blanco or Reposado
1 ½ oz Cointreau Noir
3 oz Sweet & Sour
Salt rim
Celebrate Responsibly.

These margaritas from Rockfish were just the ticket me for me and my friend Jade (who I took the pic of). The citrus added in them was a nice suprise. And they seemed to help my sinus infection. Score!

One other thing...
If you opt to use fresh, squeezed limes for your margarita, keep in mind that the quality of the lime will have a dramatic effect on the taste of your drink. The combination of tequila and limes goes way back. The large limes you typically find at the store are often too sour and can make a margarita taste bad. However, the smaller, Key limes (like what is found in Mexico) tend to have a more mellow - even sweeter - juice that will make a more enjoyable beverage.
When purchasing the limes, look for a lime that has an even, green color. Avoid limes that have a splotchy appearance or dark spots. This will indicate that the lime is old and may be turning bad. You can also see the effects of age in limes when they are cut open. A fresh lime will appear juicy and have an even coloring and pulp consistency. Older limes will have lighter patches in their pulp and can look like they are drying out. These older limes can have a very bitter flavor and will ruin an otherwise decent margarita.
