NYC Gay Parade: West Village Celebrates Gay Marriage Bill
The 2011 Gay Pride parade took place on a historic weekend in New York City: the New York state Senate had just legalized gay marriage on June 25, 42 years after the Stonewall riots that shook the Village and kick-started the modern gay-rights movement.
Greenwich Village was packed as the LGBT community turned out in huge numbers, along with their friends and families, to celebrate not only gay pride, but a major civil-rights victory. Governor Andrew Cuomo, who championed the same-sex marriage bill, was at Pride, along with Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Archbishop Timothy Dolan? No, he was feeling down.
Same-sex marriage is legal in six out of 50 US states (Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont), as well as in Washington, DC.
