Open That Bottle Night: Your Own Celebration of Wine
If you were looking for a special occasion to drink that special bottle of wine (a particular vintage, or just a cool label), then that occasion was... last night.
A response to wine-snobbery and vintage speculation, Open That Bottle Night is its own reason to decant and celebrate. This year is the tenth anniversary of OTBN, created by WSJ writers Dorthy Gaiter and John Brecher.
Personally, I missed it, and shall have to make up for it tonight. Perhaps tomorrow night as well. Wine is supposed to be fun, after all. Isn't that the whole point?
The guy's expression on the landing page for openthatbottlenight.com cracks me up.
Open That Bottle Night, which takes place on the last Saturday of every February -- around the time we all need a break -- will be celebrated on Feb. 28 this year and it's a big one: It's OTBN 10. You know that bottle of wine you've been keeping around for that special occasion that never arrives or because the wine is always going to be better tomorrow?
Open that bottle!
Like a rare and wondrous comet, OTBN will only come 'round again next year: Feb 27, 2010.

"that bottle of wine you've been keeping around for that special occasion"
I thought that NP was an english-speaking site. Could someone translate that for me please? I have no idea what it means...
Concerning the article, I just always seem to open good bottles of wine at the first occasion which presents itself! I don't see how anyone can keep good wine lying around. That's not what it was made for...Mind you, most of my friends are French, and as soon as they see a good bottle, it's "Allez! Ouvre-la!!" ("Hey, go on, open it!!")

I agree wholeheartedly with both statements above. For me, the special occasion is simply having the bottle and close friends and/or family to swig it with.
Glasses are preferred, but not mandatory.

Wow. I had no idea. Now that I know I will try not to miss it again. The good news is that it is not the 29th of February, which would mean I would have to wait 4 years. I am pretty sure though I will not make it another whole .............oooops. Too late.

we try to celebrate this every year - we invite a couple friends, ask them to bring that special bottle they have been saving, fix a nice, red-wine friendly dinner, and go to it. Over the years, we have tasted some incredible wines. We have also tasted vinegar!
