Ophiuchus: Personality Traits of the 13th Zodiac Sign
New Zodiac Sign: What Are the Ophiuchus Personality Traits?
Now that Ophiuchus (the serpent holder) in in the astrological picture, you're probably wondering if your suddenly-new sign means that you're supposed to have particular personality traits. The real answer is that, as an Ophiuchus (Ophiuchan?), your personality traits are in line with, well, your existing personality traits.
Astrologers, though, need something concrete, yet general enough to maybe apply to anyone born during a particular 20-day period. It's even reached the point where people are consulting Yahoo Answers. A 2009 Harris Poll (pdf link) shows that 26% of Americans believe in Astrology- that number could be higher if we take into account those who aren't comfortable admitting such a belief.
So people want to know: "What am I?"
Ophiuchus: Based on Imhotep
Ophiuchus is the only astrological sign that's based on a real person (though maybe Scorpio was based on a real scorpion, we'll never know). You may be familiar with the name Imhotep from the Mummy movies, but he was a real guy. The Greeks called him Aesclepius, and he was known for his knowledge of medicine back in 27 BC. Indeed, the Caduceus (the rod with the snake winding around it) is still a widely-recognized symbol for medicine.
Astrological traits must be specific enough to differentiate the signs, but general enough so that someone could look at the list of traits and say, "Yeah, that could be me".
Based on that, astrologers have gathered together a series of traits that would match such a person, including:
- Seeker of peace and wisdom
- Attractor of good luck and jealousy
- Interpreter of dreams
- One who reaches for the stars
- Wearer of plaid (this one is oddly specific)
Note that walking around telling everyone that you're a serpent holder may get you some funny stares. Not recommended in the workplace.
Like Joseph, he is an interpreter of dreams and vivid premonitions. He is envied by his peers and favored by his father and authority figures.
The Asclepius and the Caduceus, the medical staff, are based on the constellation.
Oh, and if you're reading this, it means you weren't just born, so your sign is still your sign. Now, sidereal zodiac vs tropical zodiac is a whole other can of celestial worms...

AHAHAHA. agreed.

Yeah Umm you obviously didn't read the last sentence or two. It only changes if you were born in 2009 or later and you can obviously type well enough although your reading skills could obviously use some work which means your older than two so your zodiac doesn't even change so it really isn't as big a load of crap as you claim.

Think about it... how can it only apply if you were born after 2009... the stars have been there "forever"!!! and if they no longer exist, we won't know about it for a gazillion years because it will take that long for the information to travel across the universe. Think of this discovery as Einstein reformulating the theory of gravity (Newton), with the theory of relativity... it's really cool

The whole point about this is that the alinement Has changed. The Moon's gravitational pull slightly changed the Earth's tilt making what we see in the sky slightly different. Also it has been clarified that your zodiac sign is what the stars are the year you were born. Unless you were born after 2009 there is no change.

yes, but the change in astrology is due to a change in the actuation of the earth relative to the sun which has changed just slightly enough in the last little bit to finally push the suns trajectory through a new constellation. by definition your sun sign is determined by what part of the sky the sun inhabits during your birth and given that you are not two years old or younger the sun could not have possibly inhabited the part of the sky associated with the new sign when you were born.

LMAO at those freaking out about the new sign. It only applies to you if you were born after 2009. If you were born before, you keep your astrological sign. At least read and do some research instead of pissing your pants dry...

I agree with you 110%, I have been saying this to so many people all day. Use your common sense button. You were born under a sign you keep your sign, your personality traits will not change...You are who You are!. It will only apply to new life.

There was supposed to be a new zodiac sign 2'000 years ago, so its doesnt matter if you were born a libra. You just THOUGHT you were.

Maybe I was born with Ophiuchus then, since its traits fit me so much better than Sagittarius.

this is not a new sign so no it isnt bull. this is an old sign that was neglected because 13 was believed to be an unlucky number. It also did not fit the 12 months in a year so they excluded it. It was an odd number as well. This was one of the ORIGINAL signs and the zodiac we actually follow is bull. This is the ORIGINAL calenderCapricorn: Jan. 20 – Feb. 16Aquarius: Feb. 16 – March 11...Pisces: March 11- April 18Aries: April 18- May 13Taurus: May 13- June 21Gemini: June 21- July 20Cancer: July 20- Aug. 10Leo: Aug. 10- Sept. 16Virgo: Sept. 16- Oct. 30Libra: Oct. 30- Nov. 23Scorpio: Nov. 23- Nov. 29Ophiuchus: Nov. 29- Dec. 17 Normal 0 false false false EN-CA X-NONE X-NONE /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin-top:0cm; mso-para-margin-right:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:10.0pt; mso-para-margin-left:0cm; line-height:115%; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi; mso-fareast-language:EN-US;} Sagittarius: Dec. 17- Jan. 20

I wonder if I am the only one who always thought their sign was so far off and yet a preceding sign was so spot on. For me it was so much so that I frequently kept trying to find some house or affecting other sign to explain it. Now, my sign has changed to the sign that I always thought was mine.
at 19:03 on January 14th, 2011
I completely understand not fitting in with the sign you were supposed to have. Horoscopes were always WAY off the wall. My new sign definitely describes me
at 07:49 on January 26th, 2011
I completely agree with you and have wondered about the signs for some years because I always fit spot on with the sign the preceded mine and I commented about people who fit completely with the sign which preceded their "supposed sign". People who think that this only applies after 2009 are just ridiculous. How can that possibly make sense being that the moon's pull change didn't just magically happen on the eve of some night in 2009. It's a gradual change which will likely change in the future when we are long gone. I disagree with people saying that they were born under such and such a zodiac so they should keep that sign--Take a look at the traits described by the sign that you should be based on 13 Zodiac signs. It is obvious that experience plays a great deal in what your personality is currently though tendencies align with your Zodiac sign in many ways.

So, I don't think this change effects personality. I'm still me no matter what. But I also find it interesting that we are a. freaking out about this (its silly) and b. those traits are crazy. I almost peed my pants laughing about the "wearer of plaid" I was born 1980 so I'm still a water bearer. But it doesn't matter, the stars don't make me who I am.

Did Sarah Palin have anything to do with this?
at 17:43 on January 14th, 2011
Now this is funny. Why not, every thing else is her fault. LOL

I'm Happy about the signs (kind of) I get to be two since my birthday is December 17.
at 14:20 on January 15th, 2011
I'm feeling exactly the same, considering that's also my birthday. Although, this whole thing is just completely and utterly confusing, but whatever. I'll take it. Hah.

Please explain why Scorpio only lasts 6 days: Nov 23 - Nov 29, a shorter duration than all other signs...
at 17:33 on January 14th, 2011
Scorpio is only 6 days long because the sun is only "in" scorpio (ie, passing through the constellation) for 6 days. Notice that Ophiuchus is only 20 days long. When the zodiac was made there were originally 13 signs, Ophiuchus was included. But, there were twelve months, and 13 signs didn't fit into the year all nicey-nice. Therefore they cut out Ophiuchus and made 12 zodiacs, each roughly 30 days long so that they span about one month of the year. Ophiuchus has finally made his comeback and is back in the zodiac. Apparently I'm an Ophiuchus, and I'm still not sure how I feel about it. I loved being a Sag all my life. But we'll see. The zodiac's change every time the earth spins on its procession. Guess what else is gonna blow your mind, every couple thousand year, the North Star changes too.
