Patriots Day, Red Sox, Boston Marathon: Boston Celebrates
Having lived in Boston and Concord Massachusetts on the route to the North Bridge, Patriots day in Boston is one of my favorite holidays. It is steeped in tradition and a family holiday where remembrance and celebration are all part of the fun.
Patriot’s day in Boston is one of the most important holidays in the State. Celebrations marking the American Revolution, which started on April 19th, 1775 with the battle of North Bridge in Concord. Re-enactments in Lexington and other New England towns who fought battles are attended by thousands of people and where the famous saying by Poet Ralph Waldo Emerson dubbed the event as 'the shot heard round the world.” It was the day that started America’s destiny to Independence. Re-enactments of Paul Revere’s ride to warn his countrymen of approaching Redcoats with the call “the British are coming”, and the battle at the North Bridge where the saying “Don’t shoot until you see the whites of their eyes” are know around the world.
Today Patriots Day is also celebrated by sports events starting with the Boston Marathon, where 10's of thousands participated in a grueling 26.2 miles race. The Boston Red Sox’s played the Baltimore Oriels and the Boston Celtics played the Chicago Bulls. It was a winning day with both the Celtics and the Red Sox wins and of course we always win the battle of North Bridge in Concord.
This is a traditional family holiday with hundreds of thousands of people invading Boston dressed in their favorite sports team’s shirts and rooting for their favorite runner in the marathon. This is fun, but not without remembering all those Americans who are fighting and who fought for America’s freedom. As the Sox started their game they invited families who have lost members of their families in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq out on the field and presented them with game balls. A pipe and drum parade and the National Anthem and Good Bless American opened the game.
The fun began with Boston Red Sox taking the game while the enthustic spectators loudly cheered them on between rounds of Italian sausage and onion sandwiches, hot dogs, hot clam chowder, pizza, roasted peanuts and crackerjacks served up by vendors running up and down the isles from nearby restaurants. This is a tradition, and one that the people of Massachusetts make their own. I was thrilled to be back in this great city for Patriots Day again.
