Project Runway Canada Season 2 Episode 4 (SO2EO4) Review
Episode 4 of Project Runway Canada, "Re-Fashioning the Houses," aired last night and brought the second group challenge, as designers had to group in threes and design three couture outfits based on an iconic designer.
Canadians were introduced to 14 new designers this season: Kim Cathers, Genevieve Graham, Jessica Biffi, Brandon R. Dwyer, Margarita Voultsos, Jeff MacKinnon, Jason Meyers, Baylor Orlando, Sunny Fong, Adejoke Taiwo, Jaclyn Murray, Christie Clayton, Camille Prins and Danio Frangella. In episode 1, Danio and Jaclyn dropped out of the competition and Camille was sent home by the judges, while episode 2 saw the departure of Margarita. Episode 4 sent Brandon home.
Episode 4 begins with the designers getting their next challenge.
The winner will be featured on a cover and spread in Elle Canada.
Genevieve gets to choose first and then Sunny. Kim is mad because Sunny pics her model and she doesn't like that.
Now the designers realize that they have to work in teams - but of three this time! Most of the designers don't look terribly happy about that as they just want to work by themselves.
Brandon, Kim and Baylor - Yves St. Laurent
Jessica, Jeff, and Jason - Valentino
Sunny, Genevieve and Adejoke - Versace
They have to work together to create a couture collection to represent an iconic fashion house.
They will have to send three cohesive looks down the runway and will be judged individually and as a team.
Jessica is worried that her and Jeff and Jason won't be able to get along as a team. Kim is team leader for her team and Brandon is put out that he has to work with YSL because he doesn't even know who that is.
The teams head off to get their fabric and they show up at this dingy looking warehouse and these old clothes are hanging up that the designers have to choose from to make their outfits.
Julia Grieve is there to teach the designers how to make couture from vintage clothes.
The designers get two minutes to pick their fabric and it's just a big free-for-all to pick their clothes. Brandon still doesn't seem to know what to do with his YSL challenge.
The groups work together but at the same time fight each other for fabrics and designs. Sunny finds a gross stain on his fabric right near the crotch of the pants (gross). Brandon is still talking about how he doesn't know who YSL is, and pretty much everyone else thinks that he is crazy.
Sunny tries to give Genevieve advice and she's not having any of it. Jessica finds out she doesn't have enough fabric for her design and she has to come up with something else.
Day 2:
Jason and Jessica bicker and Kim feels bad for her as she's so tired. They have a little bonding moment.
Brian comes in and brings Iman into the design room! Everyone claps!
She gives some pointers for the designers. She says that Versace has exact tailoring but it's still sexy. Valentino is sophisticated and YSL created pretty much everything to do with fashion - she was his muse at one point.
Kim thinks that Sunny's design is getting a bit old as he only makes a bustier and then attaches something on the bottom every time.
Brian comes in to look in at the designs so far. Jessica is struggling with their collection still. Brandon still insists he doesn't know anything about YSL and that's why his design isn't following the same lines as the others.
Jessica starts crying again and she gets upset. Jeff tries to cheer her up but she just can't pull it together. .
Back at the house the designers sit around and talk about their designs and Kim worries that her design is not couture enough.
Day 3:
They only have three hours left to complete their designs - in come the models!
Kim is confident that their group is going to do well. Genevieve does not agree.
Jessica is crying again. Sunny thinks that Jeff's design is very old-fashioned, and says that because he's in his forties he is just meant to work for other people - Adejoke agrees.
Jason has to tape padding to his model's leg as she doesn't fit the dress.
Next to the make-up room. The hair and make-up suit the designs and really add to the whole experience.
Kim thinks Jessica's dress is just poorly made and not well put together.
The Runway show:-
Sunny, Genevieve and Adejoke - Versace
Their designs worked well with the direction they were given. Sunny's dress, while using the same outline as other weeks seemed to really please the judges and this group were even complimented on their hair and make-up. It really seemed like this group were going to be the winners from the beginning as they had the clearest direction from the start and you felt like their designs were actually paying homage to Versace. The show didn't stay too long on these three designs, suggesting that they were set to win from the beginning.
Jessica, Jeff, and Jason - Valentino
The most dramatic group of the night seemed to escape with not that much criticism considering that their definition of Valentino was really quite broad. Jessica didn't even have to defend her dress in front of the panel, and while Jeff's dress was quite boring it really wasn't that bad. Jason had to pad out his model so his dress looked a little strange but at least he did his best and their use of red was good and creative, if a little predictable.
Brandon, Kim and Baylor - Yves St. Laurent
The final group had a disadvantage from the start, considering one of their members had apparently never read a fashion magazine before. Brandon should have just lied or at least said that while he wasn't as knowledgeable as the others, he learned all he could and was ready to do the challenge. Even Iman said the same thing. However, he didn't lie and he made the worst pair of pants I have ever seen - Iman said no one would wear those ever and she was right. Baylor's design was good if a little safe, and while I personally liked Kim's design the judges thought it was too 'ready to wear' and not enough couture, which in comparison to the other groups, I suppose it was. The judges seemed to make the right choice however and sent Brandon home, for his lack of fashion knowledge if nothing else.
Next week seems to see the competition get more intense, as the designers have to deal with non-fashion clients.
Best line of the night:
'What man would wear those pants?!' - Iman

I am learning alot about design from this show. I had never heard of it before this season. Some of the designers are just crazy good. I wonder what research the designers do before going on the show to prepare (e.g. read up on fashion houses like YSL).
