I am at Starbucks on El Paseo Drive in Indian Wells. I am homesick and missing the opportunity to file 5-6 NowPublic stories per day. Writing stories is a part of the process that I use to keep connected with the world. Here in Palm Springs, I have to admit that I am in a bastion for Republicans. Every other word is an Obama bashing.

There is an immigrant from Afghanistan who owns a service station down the street. He is devoted to caring for poor and homeless people on an empty lot that he owns behind the establishment. It is an "occupy" for homeless and the local people want him to clear out the lot. Yet, where would these people go? It is a human tragedy that American communities face throughout the nation.

The answer isn't just locking them up like animals. Each person deserves the same care that one would give to a member of their own family. Embracing that value and attitude would surely make a difference would it not?

Disconnected – on vacation

It was an opportunity to get away. My brother-in-law and sister-in-law invited us to join them in Palm Springs for a week where we were joined by another brother-in-law and sister-in-law all of whom have places here. We are dividing our time among them as they are equally gracious. At present, we are at PGA West in the Palmer Residential section and I believe we are facing east.

It is difficult to know what day it is as I was unable to secure an internet connection and our host doesn’t remember their password, etc. Who cares?

We are levitating through life out here on a green to nowhere.

I don’t play golf though I paint. I sit on the patio and paint well-landscaped and manicured palm trees and jacarandas and a host of flowers including roses and poppies all in bloom.

Coffee is brought to me on occasion. The temperature ranges between 55 and 72 degrees. We have had a warm winter back home, though not as nice as this.

I really need to be writing and filing some stories, but I am stuck in the sublime “good life.”

There is a lot of reading going on as I am surrounded by readers. There isn’t much talking unless it is about investments or children or elder parents in need of special care and assistance.

I have stepped inside while the landscapers are passing by, trimming and blowing the fresh cut golf grass.

I could get started on writing a novel, I suppose, because that requires only imagination and no research or lookups.

I have an iPad, though my skills at using it for serious work are too limited at the moment. I haven’t had time to get my iPad act together.

There are opportunities to take pictures and when I get to a place where I can share what is going on or the lack of what is going on or my disconnectedness, I will.

I desperately need Starbucks too. I think this is the land of Maxwell House – bland but comfortable.

You know what; I think that I am homesick for Arlington Virginia? I need to get back there to plan support for the May 6th May pole winding at Potomac Overlook Regional Park. I have artist profiles to complete and a whole new approach to reporting on arts and entertainment.

I guess I had better enjoy this downtime – OMG, I forgot to watch Downton Abbey!"
