Robert Mondavi

About ten years ago, I was dining with my wife, niece and her husband at the restaurant, Mustard Gril, in Napa Valley. http://www.mustardsgrill.com/

It was a chilly evening in early November. In came Robert Mondavi and his wife. I had my smallest sketch pad and watercolors and did a sketch of the couple. First I painted Robert and then his wife who was wearing high-top red boots. The pair looked great together.

We had dinner and before we left, I gave to them their watercolor sketches for which they gave an enthusiastic response.

Tonight, I opened a bottle of Robert Mondavi Meritage 2009. I tasted it, and I have to report it is splendid. I have not tasted such a fine blend since opening a 1981 bottle of Trefethn Cabernet Sauvignon. They are different wines, but the taste is similar, one for which I have been longing ever since.

Tonight, I toast the Trefethn’s and the Modavi’s whose vines are not that far apart in Napa Valley, California.
