National Pancake Day 2011: IHOP Free Pancakes on March 1

Shrove Tuesday is Pancake Tuesday, which is also observed (by IHOP and other pancake establishments) as National Pancake Day. This is not a random association: Shrove Tuesday is called Pancake Day or Pancake Tuesday in the UK and Ireland, and is celebrated with pancake-related events. In the US, National Pancake Day's only real event is the eating of pancakes. If you just want the nearest IHOP locations, here you go. Move quickly... IHOP is only giving away free pancakes until 10am.

If you miss out on National Pancake Day, don't dispair: it's only three pancakes.

Shrove Tuesday: March 8

National Pancake Day is being observed (by IHOP, anyway) on March 1, whereas Shrove Tuesday (better known as Mardi Gras) is on March 8.

Traditionally, Pancake Day/Shrove Tuesday/Fat Tuesday/Mardi Gras is the day before Ash Wednesday, when the 40-day Season of Lent begins.

For those gearing up for Mardi Gras, check out the Krewe of Chewbacchus.
