Skirts for Men Trend Hits Runways in Paris and Milan
In an unstable economic climate where retail stores are faltering and restructuring their entire business models (or closing entirely), it seems an unlikely time for designers to attempt to introduce skirts into the wardrobes of men. But that's just what we've seen on the runways of Milan and Paris, both of which just had their men's fashion weeks wrap recently.
At the trend-setting men’s wear shows this week in Paris and Milan, skirt-like skorts for men have popped up on some runways.
Yohji Yamamoto’s version was so long, flowing and full that his culottes definitely straddled the skirt/pants line, while Yves Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen showed more tailored styles in which the culottes silhouette was more defined.
Similar looks have been percolating in fashion circles recently — Mr. Yamamoto unveiled skirts for men at his September runway show for the Y-3 label for Adidas. And, Marc Jacobs has been appearing at high-profile events and parties wearing skirts or skorts since early fall.
Despite the multitude of designers who sent men's skirts down the runways, retailers don't seem to be buying it just quite yet. The fashion director for Neiman Marcus admitted they didn't buy any men's skirts to stock for spring, citing that it would be an especially hard sell in the middle of a recession.

I think what needs to be done is to have massive advertising so that women and society in general accept that there nothing wrong with men wearing a skirt, or even a dress. The advertising will also help children understand that there is nothing wrong with their dads wearing what is mistakenly referred to as ''female clothing''. People need to be taught that wearing beautiful things, whatever the make, is not the preserve of one gender alone. In this respect, I was very impressed to see Victoria Beckham walking side by side with a man in a skirt in one of the pictures. I wear skirts during the weekend but it is sometimes a source of conflict with my wife. Massive advertising would definitely help people like me.

Men do not need any permission to wear a skirt. Just do it, be confident and encouraged to do what you want. Skirts fitting men, no doubt at all, so let's get started. Absolutely nothing wrong when men want to waer a skirt or dress because originally it is their wardrobe - worn for several thousand years. And skirts are comfortable - very comfortable.

Where to find suitable skirts for guys on a budget+tips
Check; www.ebay.com. Search for "mini skirt" (more than 6,000) or better narrow it and look for "Cargo Mini Skirt". Look at the plain ones with belt loops and many pockets in Juniors size. These are a PERFECT substitute for shorts this summer for men. JUNIORS sizing do not have big hips and fit guys perfectly (this is important). Worn with guy clothes you will still look like a guy just as women still look like women when wearing pants! These can be had for $1.00 to $20.00 for really nice ones you will not want to give up. Aeropostale, Nori (camo) are great. Note: Mini skirts are something for guys not to be afraid of and there are a jillion styles to choose from of which many are perfect for the guys "as is" without modification. They are typically 11 to 15 inches long (Most are 12 inches) and that is the same as typical men's gym shorts! (Micro minis are the same length as men's running shorts). Be sure seller lists waist measurement or ask for it and don't go by mfgr. sizing. They will fit every time. (Cargo Skirts are worn typically like a good pair of Levis on the hips). A little spandex will also make it last longer, assure fit and easier to clean. These skirts in addition to being inexpensive also look more manly than most men's shorts!! Forget costly, heavy out of fashion kilts which are Skirts by definition. From a distance these look like shorts but as you know they are far more comfortable and cooler in hot weather. Ha... if anyone asks just say this is the year of "change" everyone wanted!

You are right, Patagoniakid, and I want to add some to the last posted comment: The skirt and the dress was and is today still a sign of intellectual maturity, power, influence and strength, and that is the reason that today yet priest, lawyers and judge wearing its gown.
Pants symbolize since past the simple people or soldiers, and were carried by men and women. Women wore it invisible under long dresses, just men wore and wearing it without covering: A relic from the French Revolution. We have to cange it.
Conclusion: A skirt is not just a garment of women nor does it symbolize a women, it is just worn more by women in western societies. That fact.
So what men should do is showing up with their strength, influence [if they want to] but never say anymore a skirt or dress might be a sign of weakness. Opposite is correct, especially for the wearer!

....."Skirts for men will only catch on when men become as brave, strong, determined, and self confident. Men basically often are lack self confidence, and only gain their confidence and strength by what other men and women tell them and dictate to them. One of the many side effects is that regardless of what a man truly wants to wear and would be comfortable wearing, he wears what he is told to wear because he is afraid of other people and what they might think, say or do. ".....

I am going with the new fashion trend for men, finally something different to wear.
It is sad that we have to discuss if it is appropriate for men to wear skirts and dresses. Did we discuss was is appropriate to wear for women? It's a pitiful sign of in-equality of sexes. And some men and women do not see the reality what is really going on with that.
Of course, men can wear skirts and dresses, and I am not looking in the past when they did it, just use a little bit common sense and everybody knows that there is no better wardrobe available which fits best for males body shape. So, why the questions? What is more important, health and comfort in contrast to old fashion imagination? Can't wait to see some answers to my question.

Mara, you said ..

The only problem, especially in S.Africa, is that it is very difficult to find a good-looking DRESS that FITS PROPERLY, and/or SKIRTS with a large enough Waist Band in any of the Stores (Where one could "Try it On" before Buying it).
I for one, agree with you totally. Skirts AND Dresses + Tights and Stockings SHOULD be allowed in the Male Wardrobe. They ARE much healthier than Trousers and Pants.

There is nothing wrong with skirts on men because skirts are originally mens garments. Women used it more than men in the past 200 years in western societies, but nevertheless more than 55% of all men in the world using skirted garments as everyday wardrobe. So what?
Most women in westernized societies using pants, do we ask if this is a proper dressing for women? No! So just let men wearing their skirts and give them the choice to wear pants, too. Otherwise, maybe we'll ask in 50 years "Is it okay for men wearing pants?" (as you know more than 80% of women in western societies wearing regularly pants instead of skirts or dresses - which is totally okay).

Hi from Gauteng.
I MUST agree .. Skirts (for Men) is something I would "want to have" in my wardrobe. Skirts are really comfortable (especially with Tights in winter).
I wear skirts whenever I can, but it's a pity that it is so difficult to find one that fits my waist. (Always need to get one with an "elastic" waistband.)
Get with it guys, skirts were worn by men YEARS before they invented Pants. (Checkout the Roman Army in Caesar's Time).
