Ask any person on the street about what they think of socks and sandals and you would usually get a combination of a bug-eyed grimace and a chortle. But it seems like it's not such a black and white verdict anymore. "It's a gangster way of wearing sandals" and "a footwear combination worn only by the fashion-challenged" come up side-by-side when searching for the term on Urban Dictionary. If those terms come up on the wiki-ized dictionary those definitions must sum up the public opinion. Right?

Well whatever your feelings about this polarized topic- the heavyweight rockstars of the fashion industry are taking a stance on this love-to-hate taboo.

The S&S look, commonly worn by nerdy tourists, aging hippies, grunge musicians and outdoorsy types, was trotted out unabashedly during the spring menswear collections of designers like Miuccia Prada, Stefano Pilati for Yves Saint Laurent and Nicolas Ghesquiere for Balenciaga.

For fashionistas, this odd coupling of socks and sandals constitutes a particularly egregious type of male fashion crime and belongs in a category that includes flood pants, too-tight clothing, pinkie rings and fanny packs.

Nevertheless, a handful of truly directional fashion designers feels they have the clout to turn what's considered by many to be a lapse in judgment into something that approaches avant garde.

I can't believe that this would ever become an acceptable way to wear shoes - terrible!

Call it the "nerd gladiator" or "little Hans the German" look. Either way, it's laughable.

jay.el, I like this story. It's good stuff. haha nice story. I dont think its THAT bad. If you have some snazzy socks, i say wear it with sandals and show it off. Leave the socks and sandals alone if you're going to be showing off some crummy socks

It was so unbelievably hideous, I had to take a picture. Ugh! In my own house. Most un-designy.

jay.el, I like this story. It's good stuff. YIKES! where is fashion heading nowadays? Well, at least I was never a fan of Prada and YSL. Let's hope Chanel and Dior stay classy!

(see photo above) Late 70s-early 80s HIGH HEEL Famolare sandals with parti-color flat-knit cotton knee socks make for a quirky fashion statement. I say socks with sandals has to look intentional and fresh if it's to be attempted.  Else it should be absolutely avoided

The cutting edge of high fashion: Three-quarter-length fake-designer shellsuit trousers revealing polyester white socks and seaside tat-shop sandals.

The coming scene. Naomi Campbell's wearing it RIGHT NOW*

* May be a lie

The Great British East Coast would be derelict if you banned the wearing of socks & sandals.

Socks with sandals are very comfortable, stop chafing, allow your feet to breathe much more effectively than in shoes and keep your feet warm when the weather suddenly turns cold, as it inevitably and suddenly does here in Melbourne (Australia), renowned for its' "four seasons in a day" weather.

Yes,  it no doubt looks daggy and ridiculous to people for whom fashion is far more important than function or practicality. Different people have different core values.

Evidently I must put functionality way ahead of fashion, as I routinely commit the unforgiveable additional crime of wearing navy BLUE socks with BROWN sandals, mainly because the sole choice in nice thick comfortable explorer socks where I live is black or brown and the same for mens sandals from local chemist shops, so the choices and combinations are limited. Correct: I am not a woman and do not go very far afield to shop for clothes if I can avoid it. So far as I am aware, I am not a redneck, bogun or nerd.

So, people, please stop judging things by their appearance and start to apreciate the functional value of that which looks daggy. Think of the comfort of others rather than your own (artificially programmed) sense of what looks fashionable. Fashions come and go anyway. Mark my words, one day in the not too distant future, socks with sandals will be "a la mode".......

correction: "black or brown" (socks) should read "black or blue"

Correction: black or blue socks, black or brown sandals.

Also, someone else agrees that socks in sandals have an unusually high comfort factor:
